I would imagine that the folks over in Portland Meadows aren't thrilled to see what has transpired as of late. We have non-Nike athletes kicking butt (Solomon running a fast 8 recently, Meb winning Boston, Leo winning US road mile championship), and a host of other great performances by non-Nike athletes I can't think of right now. Meanwhile, Nike athletes seem to be s****ing the bed left and right. We will probably see a few of the folks over there getting the pink slips in the next few weeks. Not to mention, the bad press from the Salazar-Hasay-Grunewald incident has left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. Something has got to change, or else I feel like the running division of their company is headed in the wrong direction? Some people are probably fretting. Just a hunch. It's karma I suppose. Can't say I hate it.
First, Nike is located in Beaverton. Portland Meadows is a horse track on the north side of Portland and is the location of NXN.
Second, there have always been very successful track athletes that don't run for Nike. I'm not sure anyone at Nike's headquarters is panicking. I'm sure they would have loved to have Meb wearing their shoes and kit on Monday, but hindsight is 20/20.
In terms of Nike athletes sh*tting the bed, again I don't think there any alarms going off in Beaverton. Bekele just won Paris in his marathon debut. The first 4 women or so at Boston were all wearing Nike. Mo Farah, one of the biggest and most popular track athletes in the world, wears Nike. Their stable of athletes is impressive and diverse.
Personally, I think it's great that more companies are getting into the mix. It just means more opportunities for elites to continue at the pro level whether they're running in Nike, Adidas, Brooks, Saucany, New Balance, Skechers, or Hoka.
