Jerry Schumacher on 60 Minutes

I appreciate how he leaves the publicity up to his runners and their performances. Some other coaches like to hog the spotlight and get more PR than their runners do.

My beef with Jerry is that he is unoriginal in his training program.. stole everything he learned from Alberto.

Schumacher should take a page from Wetmore. I don't get how somebody with so many resources and so much knowledge can be so bad at having his athletes peak at the right time.

Alberto has his 1500 - 10000 stuff down, it seems.

I thought he came off as a raging lunatic last night, worse than AlSal has ever been.

Can you really blame someone for using a system that works? I'd imagine Jerry has made some tweaks here and there too if this is correct

I don't think I've ever seen an interview with Steve Jones. There was an article in RT but nevertheless, he does seem very introverted.

I ran for Jerry. He is a nice guy; he is a quiet guy who really cares little for the spotlight.

He does his job well.

he's a coach. that's what he does. he's not a marketer or self promoter. if you want to get to know him or his principles then go run for him.

do your job.

Obviously he's a coach, not marketer or self-promoter, but over the years he's gone out of his way to avoid interviews and making anything public.

Alberto, Wetmore, etc. don't intentionally go out and find interviewers so they can spew off their knowledge, but at least they don't shy away when someone from LR or Flotrack comes by with a couple of questions.

And you have the fact that Alberto is a former star athlete in his own right. Even if he wasn't coaching, he could get interviewed every year at Boston and NYC just because of his wins there.

Jerry is hysterical and outgoing in person. I don't know why he avoids the camera but it's not for being introverted. I think it's funny actually.

I disagree. I ran for him for 3 years and while he was great around the team, other coaches and runners in general, I have to admit that he was socially awkward around parents and friends of runners. I noticed it with recruits... if they weren't big into running knowledge, he had a hard time with them. I want to be clear: it isn't easy to deal with 18-year-olds. It isn't a character flaw. I love Jerry, but I think he just cares little for the media and has a tough time with non-runners for the most part.

I have talked to both Jerry and Alberto, and found Jerry much more approachable and friendly, but that is at least somewhat situational.
