Winning time is not that impressive at 28:36. In fact, a little weak. I would have thought at least one would have been sub 28:00.

Yep and they looked smooth, ran as a team, had fun, and got the job done, got their qualifiers out of the way, on rainy and cold night, but rain ended by the time there race was up.

John Crain, 28:52.73, less than 4 seconds off the DIII national record and only the second runner in DIII history to break 29. Just awesome.

Oh brother is correct. This wasn't really a race for them.

People always ask me why track isn't more popular. One of the reasons is inherent. Basically, most races are practices for people.

Thus you are expecting fans to get excited to watch what is basically the equivalent of a pres-season football game.

Yes score is kept but the won/loss outcome is meaningless for the vast majority of people participating. The Oregon boys wanted to get in a nice workout, get used to 25 laps on the oval and get the regional qualifying time out of the way.

Yeah, I know their times will hold up, I am just not sure what this really accomplished? I guess knowing that sub 29 flat will hold up...get it out of the way asap?

Does anyone know if they are coming to Penn Relays this year?

@ Post Blue: Congrats to that DIII Guy. But he is def. NOT the second guy to break 29 in DIII. Numerous studs have broken 29 in DIII

My Div. III college room mate Larry Hadley broke 29 way back in 1984 at Penn Relays and he was not the first, nor the second as I recall. He did not have the DIII record. 29:00 is a monster achievement for a D3 runner of course, but quite a few (way more than two) have done it. Too bad DIII records are hard to search on inter-web.
