How much you improve depends somewhat on the training philosophy of the coach. There are programs that more or less try to get fast 200s earlier and get speed endurance off of that. Then there are programs like Clyde Hart's that are more aerobic oriented (also Merritt's), and these programs have people coming into form late. Christian Taylor being a jumper is going to be concentrating on speed and also on plyos (and a lot more plyos) earlier than a "textbook" program, and he should be expected to be fast earlier.

The Baylor guys always run in the Michael Johnson meet around the end of April. In the year Wariner ran 43.45, he ran about 1 second slower in the Michael Johnson meet. Merritt also ran 1 second slower about the same time.

But, once again, a TJ will have a very different kind of specific phase than a 400 will.

Did he ever try 400m hurdles? Edwin Moses was originally a triple-jumper.

Taylor is the best triple jumper in the world and has two gold medals in the last 3 outdoor championships. Why would he do another event?

Based upon the peak impact forces triple jumpers see, I think they are the most potentially versatile single-event athletes in T&F.

If he can go 45.37 right now there is no reason to believe he couldn't run as fast as it takes to be a World Champion. 1.5 seconds is massive at this level, but if it became his sole focus I'd say he could do it.

so what could he do in the decathlon? he is a string-bean, making the shot, and to a lesser extent disc & PV tough(? is this line of thinking correct deca coaches?), but i think he'd kill everything else.

Apologies, should have made it clear I think they are the most versatile athletes where an implement is not used.

Yeah but keeping that leg straight takes extreme power and strength vent.

I became a big fan of Christian Taylor's after his 400m feats back at UF. The guy's a total stud, and it's fun for us fans to see him throw down fast times like that every now and then, especially in a non-WC year like this one.

I would love to see him on a 4x400 some time, especially at Worlds or the Olympics (has anyone gotten double gold in TJ/4x400m before?), but I have to agree with the poster who speculates that Taylor is probably one of those guys who's coming on faster, earlier, because of the particular kind of explosive work that the triple jump demands.

That's not to say I don't think Taylor can go faster--in fact, I do--but I do think there's probably a point for him at which focus on the 400m and its aerobic requirements will come ever so slightly at the cost of the triple jump and his explosiveness. But I would love to hear other people's thoughts on the matter, too.

Farah is the best 5k/10k runner in the world and has FOUR gold medals in the last 2 Olympics and World outdoor championships. Why would he do another event, like the 1500m, half-marathon or full-marathon?
