This kid has always been a little bit loopy. Anyway, last night he picked up a girl by telling her about how he can trace his lineage back to George Washington. Today I told him how good that story/pickup line was. He told me he wasn't lying. I have a really hard time believing he can actually trace his lineage back to George Washington, though. He is middle class. I mean, wouldn't he be pretty wealthy if he was related to the first ever president?
My roommate claims to be a direct descendant of George Washington. I think he's full of it. Should I call him on it?

No. There have been about 10 generations since Washington. At a conservative estimate of 2.5 kids per family that's around 10,000 direct descendants that he has today.

What's wealth got to do with it?
-
George and Martha Washington had no children together. She had 2 with another guy. So there are no known direct descendants of George Washington.
-
Seeing as George Washington didn't have any children, it's pretty unlikely.

Correction: GW had not LEGITIMATE children.

Why would you call him on it? You're roommates...just talk to him face to face like an adult.

You can't be serious. You really think George Washington is taking your call? -

Even better! -
Given that George Washington was the first man in America, we are all necessarily his descendants.
-
George Washington was the Father of his Country.
We are all his direct descendants. -
So, a girl likes him because of some guy he's related to from 240 years ago.
Seems legit. -
What would it accomplish?

He's catching her on the rebound...word is that she just broke up with Sam Adams' great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandson.

GW had no known children.
However many people are distantly related to George Washington through the Ball, Warner, Johnson, and Washington families which went on to have many descendants.
Every US President has been proven to be related to George Washington.
So OP your roommate may not be wrong, just inaccurate. -

Maybe only 50,000 people are 2nd cousins or closer (many times removed of course) to George Washington. The first few generations had many children, probably 5-10. But that slowed significantly in the last century.
Most of them would be white, and many would be living in the American south or have southern ancestors, particularly in or from Virginia. -
Is he asking for reparations/affirmative action because he is a direct descendant?

Yes there is, President Ford's actual surname is King and his mother's maiden name was Gardner. Both of his parents are likely distant relatives of George Washington.
