What made the baby boomers decide to give participation trophies to everyone? This also carried over to the road racing where boomers thought it was a good decision to give out finisher medals to people who finish a 5K. Some won't even consider doing a marathon or a half unless the race gives out finisher medals.
What happened along the way to cause this line of thinking?

It may be. The boomers wre so unruly and just dickish in school that teachers had to convince them that they were extremely important and their education was neccessary because of all the great things someone as important and smart as them could accomplish.
Some people think raising self esteem makes up for being a failure.
I let my kids experience failure. It killed me to see my young child disappointed BUT they are both hard working adults who can handle adversity and set backs.
They both keep trying until they succeed.
The decision to give participation trophy is really a bad one. Why should a participation trophy given, when they can try and earn trophy for winners? Even for kids giving participation trophies are widely discouraged. In my opinion, a participation trophy has equal value as a trophy or award bought from a trophy shop like Hoult-Hellewell in Scarborough, http://www.houlthellewell.com/our-product-line/classic-trophies-awards/ .
I think there should be a small token for those who take part but trophies for the top three only. Some races a long time back used to give little cloth badges that you could sew onto things.

Favorite topic of mine. Yes I am a Boomer. Our parents worked and had little time for activities other than scouts or occasional baseball game. So our generation over-indulged, over managed overdid everything for their kids that their parents could not.
True story, I was coaching a 2nd-3rd grade mixed soccer rec league team (mid 90's). Two women parents asked about the banquet, I said we would have a cake on last game and trophy for outstanding offence, defense and most improved. They organize a full banquet and showed up with a box of trophies for each kid.
Buddy of mine (edge of being boomer-millennial) has a kid playing travel baseball. The won a no-name tournament and each kid got a championship ring! Saw it on facebook. Those kids are doomed.
It is hard to watch your kids fail, but I agree with the previous poster that its the only way they learn and get tough. Both of my kids doing well, out on their own.

You've all heard it a thousand times. "I want my kids to have it better than I had it". That's the attitude that triggered the generation of entitlement. Struggling and earning your own way isn't as bad as it seemed.
