It doesn't mean jack because it is routine for perfect everything to get rejected. And his SAT score was 2250 out of 2400. About avg. for schools like Harvard. So this is not really a news. No. It is not uncommon for Indian students to excel at academics. In reality it is the norm in the US. Ever watch the spelling bees that ESPN show? That is not so for black students. Blame it on whatever you wish, history of slavery, poor family values, white man keeping the brothers down.... whatever, but that is the situation.
This kid should be applauded. The real story here is why black-Africans do so much better than black-Americans in America. We all know why: it is cultural and family, or lack thereof.
HE will not be accepted into the Black society. He is too white. He could have a hard time finding a certain group to hang with.
Blacks do not typically like book smart blacks, nor do whites like blacks who are smarter than them.
Although he is an American, his ethnicity (being African vs. African American) reflects a growing trend in elite universities. Essentially, you accept Africans who can pay full tuition (I know he's awaiting financial aid, but the majority of these African students are upper class). They fill their purpose (black AND international??? WOW!!!) and don't cost anything for the universities that accept them. Don't get me wrong, they are qualified. Most elite universities and colleges now have a larger African population than African American population. It's a alarming when you consider that they block out qualified African Americans and only widen the education gap that people of color experience today. That one link two pages earlier about the large amount of Nigerians at Harvard doesn't surprise me.

One of the wealthiest kids in my high school graduating class was a black girl with prominent white lawyer parents, and got accepted to multiple Ivies despite relatively subpar test scores and GPA. Still a very bright and exceptional person, but I don't think driving a brand new Benz in high school counts as disadvantaged. I don't think it's a big deal, how many black kids go to Ivies anyways? That is absolutely false, while it is a fact that most schools attempt to have a diverse student body, but to get accpeted to an Ivy, you have to be an exceptional student even if you are Black. There are a tons of exceptional Black students who aplly to IL schools and just like White kids, they get turned down. As a former H.S. coach who worked the recruiting game for many years, I can tell you that the college admissions process is complicated. I have seen were one White kid gets accepted to a school, while a another White kid with better grades/test scores gets turned down. I have seen quite a few Black kids who were exceptional students not get into their school of choice. This idea that being Black and having "relatively subpar test scores and GPA" and getting into a top university is an idea that's a carryover from my parent's generation.
What I will share with you is that most schools have about a dozen special admits they give out each year, but they usually use them for athletes. I would imagine a couple of those might go to students who have managed to achieve a lot under adverse circumstances, perhaps one or two of those kids might be Black, but I don't know. I personally don't have a problem with taking a chance on a couple of kids who have done extrodinarily well under difficult circumstances. But, that's not the same as some have suggested that if you are Black, you don't need to be a good student to get into a good school.

Why do you think so? You think all of those title 9 admits in crew, squash, tennis, ice hockey are braniacs? People with enough money and influence to affect admissions are mostly white in this country. Stands to reason that most of the people who get special breaks in admissions are mostly white. there is a reason elite college campuses are predominantly white, and it's not because whites are the most qualified students, otherwise campuses would predominantly Asian-American like at Berkeley. But if it makes you feel better, go ahead and tell yourself all the whites at elites schools are deserving of their places and minorities are "racial "affirmative action" admits.
