if you're a speed based guy with a considerable kick and theres no guys who are really good in your race you might consider getting out in front early and slowing the pace.
First time running the 1500, assuming you want to just get in and run for time as opposed to place, you should just run even splits for the first three laps (this means pushing a bit from 800-1200 to keep from slowing down inadvertantly) and then start your kick when you come through 300 to go.
