Anyone have any idea how good that is. Should we annoint him as the next Ryan Hall or age group ace?
I love how the kid just stuck it to nike and skipped NXN. He ran NXN as he needed a race but didn't go to natoinals as he wanted to try to win Foot locker.
Only a junior. PBs of 9:04 and 14:24 already.

It's kind of funny to think about. Rupp wouldn't have skipped it in HS but there is no way the course is Rupp certified
Mantz has enormous potential. He's pretty undertrained, but is still an aerobic monster despite only running

Yeah, it was SUCH a mess this year. I don't know how any of the kids even finished the race! Why anyone would want to run in a neck-deep river of mud uphill in sub-zero temperatures in a hailstorm fighting 60 mph winds is beyond me.

That sounds like a real cross-country race! I know they have a lot of those in Great Britain and Belgium. I don't think a hard course and bad conditions are a bad thing. Unless of course it becomes dangerous.
On the time, it is a very fast time for a 15 year old. However, it is definitely not as strong as his 5K I think, but this makes sense because he doesn't have the training years needed to run a good half. I think 66-68min would be more comparable to his 5K time.
14:24 is REALLY good for a sophomore.
I think Hall would have run mid 60s for a half during HS, though. He's one of the most insanely talented endurance guys the US will ever see.

Preparing for his senior year cross-country season, Ryan began doing occasional workouts with coach Irv Ray and his college team at California Baptist University in Riverside CA. One in particular is sharply etched in Mickey Hall's memory. "Ry did a 10-mile tempo run with a bunch of Irv's runners, and they were talented runners. The group hung together for 5 miles, but then Ryan gapped them in the 6th mile. By the end, the other kids were so far behind we couldn't see them when Ry came in. His time that day was 48:53. That's when I started thinking, 'Okay, he's going to be a pretty good marathoner some day.'
People are missing the fact that Mantz ran that 71 half in June 2011, the summer after his 8th grade. Now, he could easily run mid-60s, maybe even OT qualifier. He could just be an age group ace but he isn't churning out high mileage already and he isn't overly physically mature.
48:53 10 mile is almost unbelievable for Hall at age 18? Would he run sub-1:05 if he raced a half? Maybe.
1:11:25 for the 15 year old Mantz really good. Possibly a single age record (US).

That is really fast for a temporun, but not impossible if he raced it. A friend of mine (just turned 18) ran 45:30 for 15K. He also just ran 1:06.00 for 13.1. He was on his way to a 1:05low but had to take a bathroom break with 2 miles to go.
71:25 is not fast at all for someone who can run 14:24 for 5000, even if you discount kara gouchers 66:57 on a slightly downhill course she as still run low-mid 68 minutes on several occasions, her best is 14:55 and she has run many 5000's under perfect conditions, in her wildest dreams she could never run 14:24.
that was one example, there are 534 women who have run under 70:50 (that is all the tilastopja list goes to) only 2 or 3 of those 534 have gone under 14:30
if the kid really went all out, he would probably run 64-66 minutes.

He ran the 71:25 after his freshman track season 2 years ago.
From the linked story:
"In 2011, at 14, he ran the Utah Valley half in 1:13:20, a 14-and-under course record. In 2012, after his freshman season, he ran the event in his 1:11:25 PR, a 15-to-18 course record."
Granted, he was only ~10 seconds faster in XC last year than he was this year, so he was probably in ~14:35-14:40 shape within a half year of his 71:25... but for a 15 year old, 71:25 at slight altitude (~4.5k feet) probably isn't too bad.
Conner's 1:11:25 was done into a strong headwind that was probably worth 2 minutes. And, as was pointed out, he was only 15 years old at the time and had not yet done much serious distance training. I would expect him to do around 1:05 right now in an average race, but I would not be surprised to see something as fast as 1:03 if he could just tuck into a pack, forget he is in high school, remember a scripture in the Book of Mormon "they never had fought, yet they did not fear death", and just go.
