Look at the all-time list for this famous course.
Why is the Men's 1st-50th spread about 15 seconds, whereas the girl's 1st-50th spread is almost four times greater, at 60 seconds?

because more guys get competitive with their running than do girls
this isnt just VCP...it's every course...every all-time list

This list looks to be from about 2005.Brad Hudson is now #9 on the list. Ed Cheserek ran 11:55 in 2012. Nicole Blood is now #2 with Carley Seymour running 13:55 in 2007. As for the differences in the times on the list you presented, they didn't start keeping records for the girls until 1977. I am not sure if that is the year that the girls started running the 2.5 mile course but a bunch of the times on the boys list are from before 1980 with Marty liquori's mark being from 1966 so a lot more boys have run the course over time. They have the updated list on NYmilespit site. I would have loved to see what Mary Cain would have run this year if she hadn't turned pro. My guess would have been about 13:40.

The course has also changed quite a bit sonce 2005. It is now a paved track. When Hudson ran it, as a hs junior, it was a sand trap. Makes the longivity of that record even more impressive.
Agree! The course was in pretty rough shape in those days. I ran that day also, a couple of races before Hudson, when I saw his time I was in awe! The guy was a beast! I think that was the last time he ran at Vanny because he moved to Oregon for his senior yr of HS. A lot of great history on the VCP hills!Vanny wrote:

Yep. Hudson ran on a completely different course. VCP used to be considered a bitch. I ran it once on the 10k course at TAC Nationals in 1990. All the steep hills, bad footing, I hated it and it was hazardous but that was what made it unique.
You can't rank cross country course records on the same course due to different weather conditions but especially with the trend of making every course easier and faster and still promote an "all-time list" as accurate.
