All Rutherford had to do was catch 3 rugby balls shot high into the air by a machine. He of course dropped one and only won £10,000 not £1 million for charity.
This reminds me of when my college coach asked the guys, "How did you get into track?"
It was so embarrassing when half the guys answered, "We got cut from the other sports."

He tried the catch the second ball with the other one underneath his arm, that's just stupid. The other reason, in my opinion, is that track athletes loose the skill to catch a ball because it just isn't necessary. I played ruby and cricket for four years while in high-school and did it at decent level, but I stopped when I went to University and just focused on running, now I can't catch a ball to save my life.
If he was in the US, he would have played American football and I doubt he would have had a problem. Sort of like returning kicks without anyone trying to tear your head off.

I assumed that was some sort of rule, and he wasn't actively trying to limit his chances of succeeding. He catches the third ball while holding the first. Would the rules have required him to hold catches one and two while trying for a third catch?
A little more context would be helpful -- but clearly this thread has other axes to grind.
He dropped it on purpose, 1 million is a huge sum buddy.
They're probably paying him some appearance fee and he gets to look like the stupid white athlete that got lucky when he beat the blacks.
Looks like he had to catch and hold on to all 3 balls, which would have been really difficult had he caught the first 2. EIther way, there was still probably some kind of inside deal for him to drop at least one.

Yep. He had to keep hold of the balls so he caught the last one with one hand. 3 would have been quite a feat.
I imagine your average sprinter is way more athletic than your average distance runner.
