How much would that improve his 5K time, coach?

Well, we never really saw Lagat focus on the 5k until he was well into his 30s. So that's a tricky comparison, in my opinion.

Love LR. No interval rest is ever too short, no mileage total too far.

And God forbid anybody should succeed with a rest day in the schedule.

Lagat was easily 7:25 / 12:45 capable. I'm guessing he might've even been

closer to the 3000m record than the 1500m record.

The point is that this seems to work for Lagat but would not be best for most others...regardless of pace. Say the guy who can't break 17 for a 5k reads this, starts taking days off but runs "really hard" the next day. I gurantee he will not improve. A day off here and there is fine but for most athletes less volume at higher intensity does not work. We also don't know Lagat's entire training program so to just start duplicating the day off followed by a long hard run would be a mistake. I lived through the 80's when American coaches tried to duplicate Seb Coe's program without knowing all of the details. "Long slow distance makes long slow runners" was the motto. Many coaches, including mine, eliminated the long run and reduced our mileage thinking we would be fresh and fast all the time. Well...we were fresh but not fast and most of us couldn't duplicate our times from the prior season. Moral of the story is to be careful when trying to duplicate the training of the elites.

All of the aforementioned athletes are more accomplished than Lagat is and are either

younger than 35 and lagat: Bekele

retired after setting numerous world records & golds: El G / Tergat

are still competing because they enjoy it: Geb (the GOAT)

This is about what type of training Lagat is doing to keep winning medals at an age where those other guys could not.
