Has anyone ever done such a thing?
You'd think it would be a bigger deal but I don't remember reading anything about it during the season and didn't find out until now
Very curious

Are you Roy Firestone?
I could be wrong, but he had the whole fiasco where NCAA was dumb as dirt and suspended him for his final season, so he probably decided to do the marathon instead then when the ruling got over-ruled in time for regionals and ncaas, it was too late to back out of his Chicago Marathon commitments
How fast did he run at Chicago? Where did he finish at NCAA's?

I am not certain but I don't think that fiasco even came up until after the marathon. Even when the news came out it seemed likely NCAAs could reverse the decision.
He ran 2:16, can't remember where he finished at NCAAs but I think he was around 10th for a while and faded to the 30s.
It was discussed a decent amount. You're just late to the party....the party that happened a long time ago.

So... why the heck did he do it? And has anyone else ever done this?
Maybe Jared just did it for those Subway commercials....

He finished 36th at XC champs @ 30:43. Off of Marathon training and rest after the it, that isn't too bad.
I think he was under the impression that he had no shot at getting his eligibility reinstated. they had appealed it two or three times at that point. He ran it well (especially without much marathon-specific training) and then when he found he could run at NCAA XC champs he had to work on getting the speed back. Here's an interview NCAAs post-race where he kinda talks about that
http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?do=videos&event_id=509&video_id=101354And one where he talks about going through the season not being able to run with the team
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlCwl8F1pkwAnd one where he talks about trying to get his leg speed back this winter after the marathon training
http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/250984-University-of-Washington-Invitational-2014/videos/732890-Jared-Ward-back-on-the-track-after-marathon#.UykyKPnJYvsIt was good to see him back on the track Wednesday before indoor champs. Did some speed and really showed that the turnover was back. Tempos and long runs have been crazy so the endurance was definitely there.
Culminating all of this in a double 4th place finish indoors was undoubtedly awesome.

So he ran 30:43 "off of marathon training", prior to running well at the marathon "without much marathon specific training". Can't have it both ways, homes.
Sorry, I probably should have clarified that some. That made no sense. When I said without much marathon-specific training I was referring to the fact that had had less than one XC season to prepare for it. All things considered, that isn't much time to prepare for a marathon.
Regardless, what little he did wasn't geared towards the 10k. You lose the turnover needed to run that shorter distance and there isn't much time to get it back after recovering from the marathon when there's one month between the two.
Because he had no idea that he'd be running NCAA's.

Don't forget he placed 4th at the Mountain Regional, a split-second behind Futsum and ahead of all CU runners. He had a bad race at NCAAs, considering.

He's 27 now, right?
Seems like that extra years really helped him hand it to those 19-20 year olds... I mean look at his improvement curve...

That race was on a super flat, easy course and conditions were perfect. No wind, good temperature, beautiful day. NCAAs was cold, muddy, in general very sucky.
OP if you didn't know about chicago, you weren't paying much attention.
there were threads about it immediately after/even during the chicago marathon. i know this because i started one.
he did it because he didn't think he'd be running xc.

What's your point? Everyone ran the same conditions in both races and Ward unerperformed at NCAAs. Do you disagree?
