Everybody on earth is related somehow. With this being said. I guess anything past 4th cousins is acceptable. Just dont have kids with her or date her.

My understanding is that a significant percentage of marriages in the world are between first cousins. In the history of marriage, something like 80% of all marriages are thought to have been between first cousins.

Small towns. Hard to travel far. West Virginia, then and now. The deep south, especially up through the early 1900s.

As long as it's not multi-generational, there doesn't appear to be much genetic risk. Once you get into several generations without mixing up the gene pool, that is where you start running into issues (ie. the royal family, founder effect, etc).

I think niece or grand niece is the closest I think is acceptable.

What about step-siblings when you became step siblings late in life? Nieces/nephews via marriage after a divorce that nullifies the niece/nephew relationship?

Genetically there is no problem, these are all social issues. It depends on how one's family and friends would react, and what type of social ostracization the couple is willing to deal with.
