Looks like the Ivies are going to continue to get stronger on a national level. 4 of the 8 teams were at XC NCAA's last fall and 4 of the 16 milers lining up this weekend are from Ivy schools.
From the sound of things it appears that Princeton and Harvard have monster classes coming in and Columbia's is shaping up very well.
Thoughts?
The trend is just going to continue. More and more kids (and their families) are figuring out that, with need-based Ivy financial aid, their bottom line college expense is lower if they go Ivy. This is particularly true for males--not too many full rides out there for men, and a half ride to Inchoate State could end up costing a middle-class family more than they'd pay to go Ivy.
The Ivies' traditional strength is in the middle distances and distances. They'll keep getting stronger there, but you're going to see more *top* recruits in the explosive events, as well.
Two factors: many white suburban distance kids have grades and professional aspirations don't figure in to the choice (like some other sports).
Distance runners are often times motivated which is why a lot of them are using their running abilities to get them into a college they otherwise would not have gotten into. It is smart, and this trend will continue on the men's side at least.
Not to mention that Ivy Leaguers get to run in the--by far--best US college conference meets, the Heps.
I don't mean "best" just in terms of marks--though they put up plenty of good ones--but in terms of competitiveness and spectator involvement. AFAIK the Heps also regularly have the highest attendance of any D1 conference meet.

I was at the Ohio state indoor meet last week and Otterstedt looked fantastic in winning the 800 very easily in 1:53.
ADD: AIDAN GOLTRA, COLIN TIERNEY - COLUMBIA
Dartmouth class is solid at the Mid D at least, as well.
Reading Malcolm Gladwell's book, "David and Goliath," I was surprised to learn that, while the Ivy leagues might not give athletic scholarships, they tend to look for a bottom third of the student population which has an alternative outlet for achievement, so they don't feel terrible compared to their genius classmates, despite the fact that the bottom third might be the top third anywhere else. '
I'm not surprised the Ivies have done so well lately. Seems like this trend will likely continue.

If you're just squeaking into an Ivy academically statistically, but aren't exceptional in a non-academic facet of your life, you're not going to get in. They want those kids to be the athletes, musicians, actors, artists, kids of famous people, etc. because that gives the most value for the school over just another kid with a 1400 SAT looking to go to an above average graduate school and become a run of the mill professional. That provides nothing for them. But a politicians son, or All American athlete, or world famous musician all bring value even if it's not through academia.
