I am hoping for some coaches' opinions on this.
I find it very easy to bang out fast repeats of 200-300m all day long, but at 400 on up it starts getting a lot harder. Even if the overall volume is the same - like, 8 x 400 as opposed to 16 x 200 with less rest, even though intuitively it seems like a similar workout to me.
I was thinking, maybe the reason is because fast-twitch fibers last about ~40 seconds, so in the 300s I can rely almost entirely on fast fibers, but in a 400 or 500 the amount of slow twitch fibers needed greatly increases? Let's say for the mile, should I focus more on repeats of 500m-600m, in order to train myself to run fast off of slow twitch fibers?
