Why do announcers and coaches say "football" so much when there is no need?

Especially when its not even football. Anywhere else in the world, when you say football it means the real game of football (soccer). How many times does your foot even touch the ball? For most players the answer is never. Unless you are the kicker you can get penalized for your foot touching the ball. So why call it football? We should call it American football. Like American gladiators. Because that's what the players look like anyway.

I have been saying this for a very long time and it is excruciatingly annoying. It is tied in very closely to the redneck/southern/macho culture I have noticed, in that it is usually the most obviously dim-witted players/coaches/fans etc. who feel the need to CONSTANTLY add the word "football" to every statement. Hey! We KNOW it's a football game! We know it's a football, held by football players and football teams!

Typical usage:

"We know we're a good football team. If we just go out there and take care of the football,we knew we would win this football game. Every player on this football field is commited to a great football season."

Puh-lease, you greasy oafs, stop this trend before it swirls out of control and destroys us all.

They have been hit in the head so many times that if they didn't keep saying "football" over and over they would forget what game they were talking about.

Thanks for the support Howard. My wife makes fun of me all the time but it drives me crazy. I have counted over 50 unnecessary uses of "football" in one game. Yesterday in the Colts-Titans game a ball was overthrown in the end zone. The announcer said that the receiver "was running out of football field even if he had caught the football." Where do they find these people? Is the talent pool of commentators really that shallow? I think the other guy is right in that they are probably all former players who got hit in the head about 5000 too many times.

Ping Pong is not an Olympic sport, table tennis is. But Whitney Ping is an Olympian.

You know who's great at football? Brett Favre. Here's a guy who when he throws the football and it's caught and the receiver runs it into the end zone, it's a touchdown.

Brett Favre would be great at any other sport too. Look, there's blood all over him!

This past hurricane season, they could have named two storms either Brett or Favre, but they chose Bonnie and Frances. It's probably a good thing too, because Hurricane Favre would have destroyed all of Florida, especially the NFL cities.

Now, if the hurricane was Hurricane Favre and then Brett Favre went there, who would win? That's easy - Favre wins hands down with dirt and blood all over him.

This should tell you something: don't call someone a moron and then be unable to form the simple contraction "you're."

what kills me is the announcers always seem to drool over any football connection..ie michael carter shot putter or john capel or renaldo nehemiah or oj simpson...its probably because most of the announcers are not track orientated so they feel joe sixpack needs a football reference...of course the other side of the coin is they do speak non stop of how fast speed players run the 40 but is that with a running start and handtimed by agents? windaided? it sure aint in uniform which is what matters...oh crap...it appears ive gotten onto a soap box and i am fraid of heights

I get annoyed when the NFL tries to steal Track/Field athletes for football (not talking about Dwain Chambers here).

Commentators and coaches do go nuts with the football references. I have no clue why they do it other than the possibly of them being mentally retarded. You don't hear cross country coaches stay somthing like:

"We have a good cross country team. If our cross country runners have a good cross country race then we're going to be successful. The key is for our guys to be aggressive on the cross country course and beat as many of the other cross country runners they can by the time they cross the finish line. If our cross country team can do that, we're going to be a hard cross country team to beat."

If any distance coach says anything like that they need to be thrown out on the street and shot just to save the dignity of our sport
