Happened today at a little track meet I helped with. That time seems pretty good for a 2nd Grader...Most adults probably can't run faster than that. Now, a lot can happen in life, but what kind of potential does a kid like that face? As a parent, you would have to be pretty excited about that time.
I ran my first 5k as a 2nd grader in 24:00, which is about 7:45 pace. I'm DEFINITELY no prodigy or anything, but your time as a 2nd grader doesn't show how successful one will be. He could be a 4:10 HS miler or a 5:00 HS miler, who knows? There are a lot more factors than a mile run in 2nd grade.

2/3 of americans are overweight and half of those are obese, so, you are correct that "most adults probably can't run that fast" but it doesn't matter.
7:20 for a mile is 7:20 for a mile. it doesn't matter.

Get the kid on a 100 mpw program ASAP.
That's a pretty good time, from what little I've seen from youth races. My son - also 2nd grade - ran 7:16 this fall on a cross country course, which I thought was decent. He won, but a little scrappy girl was right on his heels most of the way. She ran 7:25 or something.
Anyway, like the others said... who knows what it means, if anything. My kid had fun. We celebrated with donuts.

I'm not around kids that young and have no idea what kind of times they run for a mile...Not like I'm out there recruiting 2nd graders lol. I was just curious how "average" 7:20 was for a kid that young. Regardless, I was more happy to see how many parents brought their kids out for this little race.
Check the 7-8yo (mostly 2nd graders) 1500 results from the last Junior Olympic national meet (2013). And you better sit down first.

Winner was 5:11 (5:33 mi?) And that kid *turned 7* last year. Hes probably in 2nd grade NOW.
So, is 7:20 good? If he rolled off the couch last week and ran it, sure, its pretty good. Maybe he gets to 6:20 even with a season of running. Maybe lower. Probably wins some races. beyond that, hard to say.
7:20 for a 2nd grader is wonderful. That child may have a natural, untrained talent for running. If this child continues to enjoy running as he/she reaches junior high/high school, I am sure the child can develop their running talent further. No need for a 2nd grade child to run a 5:33 in order to be considered talented. I think a 2nd grader who can run a 5:33 mile is ridiculous; amazing but ridiculous. Do you think he/she just "rolled out of bed" and could miraculously run a 5:33?????? Absolutely not!! I equate a 2nd grader who can run a 5:33 mile to a bear that can ride a bicycle; cruel and unusual punishment behind the talent. In summary, 7:20 is a wonderful start!

Also, I have no idea what the 533 kid does, but very fast kids I do know, don't do anything crazy, so he may well be doing it mostly on raw talent. Bear on a bike... That's funny.
