On the track if you're leading the race early on at a fast pace (at the elite level) you will apparently most certainly be destroyed in the end unless you're just way better than everyone. Why then are so many runners just fine with taking the lead several miles away from the finish line in a road race?? And in XC too!!!
I know, I know, on the track the wind is hitting you a lot more often, etc. etc. But even on days when it's not windy, leading the race is HEAVILY discouraged in a track race of 5k/10k or whatever. Oh, but if someone is leading a road race or XC race several miles out, it's all fine and dandy, and they sometimes end up pulling away if they're good enough.
