PROTEST in the SEC indoor championships

And after the PROTEST A+M got DQ'd and Florida won the team title... Pretty big deal for the conference championship. No conspiracy. Sometimes protests happen and the original rule is overturned but people here just don't understand that.

Had A+M just hung back and finished 5 seconds back of the leader rather than trying to hold her off the last 75 meters then they would have won the championship.

So UF won the entire thing?

Yeah, they won the women's because of the protest. Pretty epic. A+M could have jogged the last 100 meters and won the meet.

That is a cowardly move by the coach to call for a foul that didn't impact the results of the race. Assuming that it's true that it didn't impact the results of the race like you are telling us.

Looked liked Eutsey clipped Ekpone and that's why Eutsey lost her balance and stuck her arm out. It didn't look like Ekpone elbowed Eutsey and I don't think she could have kept running like she did if she got an elbow to the chest.

They have a replay of the SEC meet on ESPN3 the race starts about the 4:35 mark and the "contact" happened around 4:38:20. Other replays round the 4:39:30 mark.

How I think the officials probably saw it is that the A+M girl never actually got around the UF girl for the pass that she tried to make about 30-50 meters before the contact so the UF girl had the right to the inside (The two step in front rule whereby you have to be two steps in front of the other athlete to cut in). The A+M girl thought she had the right to the inside lane at that point but she wasn't far enough ahead so she tried to cut in. I could be wrong but that's how I imagine whoever is on the appeal committee saw it.

Honestly, watching it live I thought it would be called a foul but wasn't sure whether it was on UF or A+M. The yellow flag did go up. I don't know. I have no dog in the fight, but I lost my team's high school conference meet in a very similar fashion (getting DQ'd and losing my points costing us the win) which is why I thought this was fascinating.

A&M didn't have a right to the inside lane. I don't think a DQ was the correct call by A&M was the reason for the tangling of bodies.

Because I don't have anything better to do, I recorded it and watched it in slow motion.

On the backstretch A&M passed Florida. She never got more than a stride lead, and she never moved inside. Going into the turn, florida started catching up slowly (she had the inside). Approaching the top of the turn, both women were in lane 1 and A&M had at most 1/2 a stride lead running on the outside of lane 1. As they approached the top of the turn, A&M's arm swing hit Florida a glancing blow in the chest. At this point they are essentially on top of each other. They ran one more full stride were the elbow again struck Florida in the chest. This time their arms got tangled together. When they disengaged, A&M had lost balanced and momentum and swung wide. Since A&M never had a lead, and Florida stayed on the rail, it was a foul.

Should it have been called or protested? I've seen many far more trivial violations than this called. Rules are rules and this one was broken. The result didn't changed but Florida could have possibly run faster setting an even stronger school record.

Note also that not only did a championship ride on this outcome, but a lot of cash as well. I have no doubt that Mouse gets a bonus for bringing home a championship trophy, so I can't blame him for protesting.

I saw it the same as you but don't feel it warranted the DQ but...whatever.

I don't think UF protested. The flag was raised and the DQ made after review. A&M appealed and was denied.

Apparently it was called; a protest was a protest of the DQ. I do not think a coach started the DQ process. I also read the same commentary that the leading runner was not clear when moving over (even though she might have been clear earlier).

Someone explain how she gets DQd.

The A&M girl is in front. The Florida girl comes up from behind her and initiates contact and the A&M girl is the one who gets DQd. I don't get it. Yes the A&M girl wails out her arms but she lost her balance because the other runner initiated contact. I don't think the A&M girl should have to move over and let the Florida girl pass her on the inside.

According to the end of the broadcast the flag went up, it was ruled "no harm, no foul" after review, UF protested, their appeal was accepted and A+M got DQ'd. I watched it live and that's what they said. It might be towards the end of the replay where they mention the UF protest (it was right after the men's award presentation, but the replay may cut off before it) and then it cut before the result of the protest was revealed. Unless the announcers were mistaken, which is always possible.
