I mean, I understand wanting a backup plan, but seriously?! Without even having run a time?!

What's the qualifying time? 3:43? 3:59 with a mile time?
Maybe for Rupp USATF took "DNF" to count as sub-3:59?
He qualified with the last rep of one of his post-race workouts.
The qualifying time is 3:44.6 (1500m), or 4:01.2 (Mile).
He is entered with NT (No Time).
If we are going to complain about entrants, why not look at Tommy Schmitz in the men's 3000m. Qualifying time is 8:03.00 and and he has only run 8:03.15. Didn't run the time and has zero shot at making the team or even being a factor in the race, unlike Rupp.
Automatic Qualification under USATF Rule 8:
RULE 8
AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION
Automatic qualification, as listed in this section, shall not abrogate any entry requirements
other than the qualifying requirements for a championship. Any athlete who attains any of the following shall be afforded automatic qualification into a USA Indoor, Outdoor, Race Walking or Marathon Championship or USA Olympic Team selection in the same event in which the performance was attained:
1. Track and Field -
(a) During the current or four previous calendar years, earned an individual medal in track and field in an Olympic Games or in an IAAF World Indoor or Outdoor Championship.
(b) Is the reigning USA Indoor or Outdoor champion.
(c) Has a World or Olympic ‘A’ Standard that would apply to the current championship team selection.
(d) Finish as one of the top three at the preceding year’s corresponding national championship (Indoor qualifies for Indoor, Outdoor qualifies for Outdoor).
He qualified thanks to his thyroid issue
I didn't think he fit any of the automatic qualifiers, but maybe I'm wrong. I figured he got in by appeal. Why wouldn't they let him in by appeal? Hell he probably ran 3:44 to open his 2-mile if only they had an official finish cam.
methinks below is the applicable rule, which is why Rupp's Status is listed under "ACCEPTED" as opposed to "QUALIFIED".
3. In the USA Track and Field Championships:
(a) All entered contestants shall have met the qualifying requirements / meet entry
guidelines adopted by the respective sport committee, or by the properly authorized
subcommittee thereof or must be approved by a special appeal subcommittee
appointed by the Chairs of the respective sport committees;
Not sure what criteria this special appeal subcommittee may use in making its determination; seems opaque.
You apparently didn't read the fine print that says qualification standards only apply to non-Nike athletes. This kind of crap has happened many times in the past (remember "Gouchergate"?). Miles Batty is not qualified with a 3:46, while Rupp is accepted with NT--situation normal. But Batty is sponsored by Asics.

But 3:46.72 is clearly not good enough (more than 2 seconds outside the mark). Haven't heard of "Goucherghazi".
Why aren't you people reading what Marcia posted? He got an Olympic Medal in 2012 so he automatically gets in.
The rule stipulates "same event". He got the medal in the 10k.

My bad
Rule 8-1-c allows the IAAF Indoor WC standard which is 3:41 / 3:58 in the window 1/1/13 - 2/24/14, which Rupp has from last year's indoor season. Don't know why the USATF sheet doesn't show that.

^ This.
Qualifying window: November 15, 2013 - February 16, 2014
Combined Events Qualifying window: January 1, 2013 - February 16, 2014
The 1/1/13 date is for the Combined Events Championship. What is that?

coach d shows off his cluelessness once more.
Seems like everything listed under Rule 200:(c) Decathlon (see Rule 200) (d) Pentathlon (see Rule 200) (e) Indoor Pentathlon (see Rule 200) (f) Indoor Heptathlon (see Rule 200)
