I was at a 30-person tournament last night with rebuys, 25 up front for 1000 chips, and 25 for 1000 add-on at any time the first hour. I decided that I was only going to rebuy if I went all-in and lost my chips. This didn't happen and I had about 1600 chips after the break. At this point there are still 28 in the tourney.
So about 5 hands later, I'm on the button, am in the pot for 100 with A-J offsuit and the big blind goes all in before the flop for 1200. Everyone folds so it is now a head-to-head situation. I put him on a small pair at best because he has been playing somewhat recklessly, and decide to call. Sure enough, he turns up a pair of 3's. To make a long story short, I ended up losing the hand and most of my chips.
So my reasoning was this: I originally intended to "make my money" off other guys' chips instead of rebuying, and I knew I needed to double up in order to get back near the chip leaders. I knew A-J was probably a slight underdog. But blinds were still at 50-100, so I had some time. This is the part of my game I am working on most, compulsive decisions. Do you think I made the right call?
On a side note, I was dealt Q-Q on the next hand and went all in before the flop with the last of my chips. 2 callers, flop came A-J-Q. One guy bet big and scared the other guy off-- turned out he flopped the straight with K-10! Chances are I would have gotten hosed on this hand anyway, had I not lost the previous hand :-).
