I will be here a couple weeks and my understanding is that many HS tracks are chained up to the public, even on weekends when no one is using them (?).
I will be in Decatur, so I am looking in this vicinity.
I understand that the Agnes Scott track is open to the public after-hours (after 6 or 7?). True? Decent track?
Any other tracks open to the public? At all times?
I heard there is one downtown near Piedmont park. Open to the public or school track?

The agnes scott track is pretty beat up. It's a crushed tire rubber surface that used to be awesome but its rather worn in places in lane 1. It's usually open at night. There is a track with what appears to be a mondo surface down near grant park but I haven't checked that one out at all cuz it is sorta in the hood. There are no tracks open to public near piedmont park. There is a crushed gravel path in piedmont park called the active oval that is marked every 200 meters, which is what I usually use.
Don't even get me started on Grady high school not allowing the community to use their track. And especially don't get me started on Georgia Tech because they don't even let their own student population use their track except for the athletic teams. That's a story and a thread for another day.

Yeah, it seems incredible to me that they are so restrictive on the track usage here. Where I am from (northeast), if the track is not being used by the high school, they don't care who uses it in most circumstances. And universities like Harvard are very laid back on letting the community use their indoor and outdoor tracks.
You said nothing near piedmont. my friend said there is a nice looking track near piedmont across from a trader joe's. Is this a HS track that is chained off from the public?
Anyone else? Any other ideas? I will hop a fence if I have to.

grady high school is the track you're thinking of near piedmont park. it's a nice facility -- a big stadium, actually. used to be open, but not sure it is anymore. i'm guessing not...and since it's a big stadium, it's easier for them to secure it.
if you have a car, i'd recommend tucker high school about 8 miles to the NE of decatur. new track, always open, and normally few people.
closer to downtown is cheney track. believe it was a practice track built for the '96 olympics. think it's open, too. haven't been there, but friends of mine like it.

where does the atlanta track club work out? (I know it is a huge team, but I mean the members who actually race on the track)
I know this is an older post but thought it could be helpful for others searching. Cheney stadium, training track for 96 olympics, is a nice public track. Atlanta track club helped get it resurfaced in 2017. Free parking and track is nice. I went today for the first time and it was empty on a Sunday mid day.
