I was wondering if anyone her has had a similar experience.
Recently, my daughter collapsed shortly after a 3000 meter race.
Some background:
She is very fit and at the end of her Sophomore indoor track season in high school.
She is a three season runner and trains very hard during the off season as well building her base.
She has never had an issue finishing off a race strong and was well on her way to doing so the other day at a pace very similar to her most recent race and pr for the distance.
The meet was in the afternoon so she drank quite a bit of water during the day and the night before.
I estimated her sodium intake to be 750 mg on the day of her race. The night before she had ravioli with no sauce. In the morning she had oatmeal with grapes and 1/2 banana cut up within it. She also had chocolate milk. She usually has a sandwich for lunch but her schedule was different that day becuae she was taking exams. She had trail mix and some cashew when she got home along with a bagel with cream cheese. They were eaten over three hours prior to her race.
She felt fine during her warm up and was running at a good clip from the gun but not over her head either. With five laps to go she started feeling dizzy. Her legs also felt heavier than normal. Prior to that she was fine. It got progressively worse until the last lap where she was weaving in and out of her lane. Her last lap was painfully slow for her. When she crossed the line she collapsed.
I picked her up and carried her off the track. She could not move on her own. We almost called the rescue but she was getting better although at a really slow rate. She threw up several times. She said if she stared in one direction she was ok but if she shifted her vision she would get dizzy.
We got her home. The next day I took her to the Dr where they took a blood test and ekg. Her ekg was normal and her blood work looked good. She takes an iron pill each night with vitamin c.
The blood work did reveal a slightly low potassium level. It might have been lower the day before. We don't know.
She noticed in the day or two following the race that she was a lot more sore in her legs than usual.
We're not sure what is going on. It could be a number of things but not the obvious ones like dehydration and anemia.
Anyway, even though I have the Doctors working on it I was wondering if anyone has been through something similar and has since found out what is going on?
