In our hearts we know this to be true.

yep
And dragsters aren't motor vehicles, since you wouldn't use one to drive across the country in.
Somebody bring the front end of the horse up here - I think we're ready for final assembly.
I 100% agree with you. sprinters are not runners.
Yeah, but they sure run fast.
'Tis True
If you rely on starting blocks you are not a runner. If you have to devote training time to your reaction time out of the blocks you are not a runner.
You guys are just jealous that you can't run fast enough to be a sprinter.
wow.... if i didn't read it i wouldn't of believed it.
if you take the weekends off, you're not a runner.
Along the same lines,
If people are interested in your event, you're not a runner.

does that mean shot-putters ARE runners?

nope.
you committed a fallacy of denying the antecedent.

and hurdlers by the look of that pic. who would have thunk it.
Ever wonder how fast Michael Johnson could have run the 1500? I would say he was a runner.

until he does it, he is not a runner. just a sprinter.
the very fact we have to wonder about it proves the point.
So, let me get this straight. If you run extremely fast, you are not a runner. If you run slowly over a long distance, you are a runner. wow. I'm guessing this is an attempt by slow distance runners to make themselves feel more credible as athletes.
the development of the nervous system, the ablilty to create and apply force and the specific short speed endurances required in the sprint disciplines take as much scientific knowledge and exact mixtures of effort and rest as in the distance disciplines.
try creating those kinds of velocities for 4-6 seconds, take 3 minutes rest and do it again. no you won't breathe heavy, but you will surely be doing a high level of work.
although I will say that distance runners tend to have a greater work ethic
being a runner and being an athlete are two different things
And anyone who runs a "race" so long that the majority of folks entered will, walk during the "race" or eat a small meal during the "race" are not runners either by the way. (i.e. most 50k and up races).
