FIFA just crowned Christian Ronaldo as soccer player of the year for the 2nd time after 2008. Well deserved, all these years he finished 2nd behind Messi, but 2013 was his year again. Congratulations, CR7.

The whole CR7 thing gets on my tits. It's not cool.
He would be a good miler

He would probably be good at any distance. He is explosive and drops most other players when sprinting (despite him having the ball) for distances of typically 40-50 meters.
On the other hand, he frequently clocks as many as 9 miles per game, so that is impressive, too.
While I typically despise soccer for the lack of athleticism (come on, most soccer players are tiny), Ronaldo is an exception. There is a reason he is the best soccer player. He is freakin RIPPED. His lats are impressive and help him get the hottest model girlfriends. Basically, he is that good, he could probably make it in the NFL, too, if he wanted to.
Fun fact: Ronaldo does not drink any alcohol and bulks on a diet mostly based on animal fat and protein.
He's the best, and deserves the award. Too bad we have to go up against him in the first round of the World Cup next year.

He was the best in 2013. He's not "the best", though, that would be Messi. Ronaldo definitely deserved this award.

Too bad he'll have to win games entirely by himself.
(though he's been known to do that)
I'm a huge Messi fan, but for this year, there was no touching Ronaldo. He had an absolutely dominating year (even if his success isn't reflected in trophies).
Ronaldo finally won it.
Messi won it the previous 3 years.

4 years. Ronaldo clearly deserved it this year.
He's got great definition and you can tell that he does not neglect arm isolation exercises, like so many "strength oriented" athletes.

CR7 is the best. He is the most complete player in the World ... better than the one-dimensional Messi imho. He's good with both feet as he is in the air and his speed puts the fear of God in many a defender. He has proved himself in Portugal, England and now Spain and delivers for country as well. He does have a perception though, many in football and the media perceive him as arrogant, but I think it's jealousy based on his good-looks and hot girlfriend.
All those upper body exercises are a sign of vanity, nothing more.

Ridiculous. Just because Ronaldo has different ways to score doesn't make him a better player. As a forward your job is to create goals, however you can. Messi crushes Ronaldo in lifetime goals/appearance and lifetime assists/appearance. At best you can argue that Messi has had a better supporting cast. But I don't but the notion that scoring .6 goals per appearance 12 different ways is better than scoring .7 goals per appearance 2 different ways.
Full disclosure here:
I am an Argentina football fan and have been for a while.
That said, (and I may be a little biased here) Messi is a guy from "another dimension".
Nobody plays football the way Messi does. No one even COMES CLOSE.
The gap between Messi and anyone else is huge!
Messi is a boy genius!
What Messi does in a game/with the ball can only be done by Messi.
As for 2013, Ronaldo definitely deserved it. MEssi was out for a long time and in my opinion, there was no way he was going to win it.

That neck makes it look like he'd be a great sword swallower if you know what I mean.

The point about the better supporting cast is true. Messi would be mundane without Xavi and Iniesta feeding him balls. Again, CR7 has proven himself in different teams, leagues and environments. A prodigy in Porto, honed his skills and became a superstar at Manchester United in the very competitive English Premier League, and now he's at his peak at Real Madrid: a star-studded team notoriously most hard-to-please public. Add to this, he's single-handedly carrying his (by all accounts) mediocre Portugal national team taking them to the semi-finals of both the World Cup and Euros in 2012. Messi, on the other hand is very comfortable at Barcelona where he's been since age 13, and he'll probably retire there too, never testing his mettle elsewhere.
Cristiano Ronaldo is a friggin MONSTER ... not just the best now, but one of the greatest the world has ever seen. Up there with the Peles, Maradonas, Zidanes and Brazilaian (fat) Ronaldo.
Cristiano Ronaldo is a freak athlete for his sport. Most complete player? Absolutely not. A complete player in my mind is one who excels both in attack and defense, like a box to box midfielder. Steven Gerrard circa '06-09 is an example.
Cristiano Ronaldo's ability to pass the ball and create scoring chances isn't even close to Messi. I honestly believe if Messi played in the slot Cesc plays, he would still be incredible. I don't think C.Ronaldo would be at the same level in that slot. Also his much vaunted free kicking ability isn't what it used to be. Someone already mentioned the soft excuse many people give that C. Ronaldo has an inferior team to Messi, which is absolutely insane, since Madrid have shelled out +70 mil for three players in the last five years(including CR). This past summer, 143 million Euros spent.
All that said, he deserved it this year. On a final note, there is nothing wrong with being arrogant. Every player in the "legend" discussion, Pele, Maradonna, Beckenbauer, and Cruijff are all arrogant. CR is hated because he personifies the Diva player that is loathed in the English speaking world. It also doesn't help that he played for two of the biggest teams in the world that while are beloved my many, they are hated by even more.
He never played for Porto, you want Sporting.
When Messi and Ronaldo are both on top form, Messi is better. That's why he's won the prize 4 years in a row but more importantly it's why Barca have been dominant during his "reign". Ronaldo won by default this year. Messi's year was spoiled by injuries (he shouldn't even have come 2nd in the vote) and Ribery was never a serious contender, he's just the player they happened to pick from the impressive Bayern team. I'm not even sure most Bayern fans would say he's their best player. He plays the same position Ronaldo plays for Real but he's not nearly as decisive. Bayern without Ribery are still probably the best team in the world. Barca without Messi are ordinary. Real without Ronaldo are better than Barca without Messi.
