I would be grateful for feedback on my 12-year old daughter's low ferritin level and whether we should do something to boost it. I realize that there's controversy surrounding whether low ferritin is a problem (for performance or in general) if she is not anemic, but I have it in my head that even if it's not a problem today it may become one in the future given her relatively low iron stores (if I have the science right).
Here's the background: my daughter is 12, soon to turn 13, and is in 7th grade. She ran about 10 miles per week last year, and she has stepped it up in junior high and is now running about 25-30 miles per week. She is also a longtime vegetarian, near vegan, as is my wife. Since it's relevant to my question, I'll also add that she's totally healthy and is developing normally (according to her doctor), but she hasn't had her first period yet.
When she had her annual physical last week, we had the doctor do a blood test including ferritin on the idea that it would give us baseline reference scores for the future. But she feels fine, no lethargy or anything obvious.
So the big question is: do we do anything to try to boost her ferritin levels? We will probably add cooking with an iron skillet occasionally, but I guess I'm wondering if it would be foolish to give her a low-quantity iron supplement, say 25mg per day (or higher?). I'm reluctant to do anything too radical, such as much larger doses of iron like 150 - 300mg.
Any thoughts from the runner-docs or other experts on here?
Thanks! (Below are the full results)
