To my knowledge, Komen is the only one to break the 8 minute barrier, is this true?

+1
Bekele, El G, Geb, Lagat, Farah
Yes. This is true.
Is it equivalent to about 7:27 for 3000m, so there are a few who can (could have ) done that:
Morcelli
El G
Geb
Bekele
Farah
How about Said Aouita?
Let's not forget Craig Mottram, the third fastest man ever over 2 miles, running 8:03.50 while cheering and slowing down the last 30 meters. Vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esIV_UBEAaw
His first mile was ~4:05 so even out his splits and have him run through the line, he likely could have done it.
No disrespect intended, as Mottram was great for a period of time, but if he could plausibly do it I'd imagine the list is longer than we think.

If I'm not mistaken, Geb tried at least 3 times and ran 8:01:xx in each of them. An interesting set of results to be sure.
Dang! wrote:How about Said Aouita?
just under
however, he had a funny problem with ~ 3k distance
in '85 with something like 3'28-flat ability & probably about 12'55, he shouda absolutely obliterated rono's pretty jurassic 7'32.1wr but best he managed was 7'32.9 !?
it was largely due to his laziness in maintaining fast pace solo when alone ( albeit i don't think he got anywhere near good pace in his attempt )
he finally ran 7'29wr when well past his peak
in '85 :
3'28.0 / 12'55.0 ->7'24.3 ! , 7'59.7
he was capable of 7'24 at his peak if he'd really "mo-ed it"
abcdf wrote:Is it equivalent to about 7:27 for 3000m
that's far too slow
the usual 1.08 rule gives 8'00 as 7'24.4
i did some equivalency tables & i get ~ 7'24.9
so there are a few who can (could have ) done that:
Morcelli
El G
Geb
Bekele
Farah
even with a 7'24+ equivalency, your list gets no drop-offs
it's probably biggest shame of the '90s/'00s in middle distance that these guys ( apart from hicham ) never got a 2k split quicker than 4'56 in order to get a real crack at komen's time

At first, I though 'no f-in way!' But, after a little thought, I'd have to agree with you. I'm a little surprised they didn't set one up right after the WC.
Does anyone think Rupp could have done it, say when he ran his 3:50 indoor mark? I'd say probably 'no', but I would think he would have been close in an ideal race.

i doubt it...3000m isn't the biggest deal in track
Komen sub 8 twice.
7:58.6 Hechtel, Belgium '97
7:58.91 Sydney, Australia '98

the biggest shame of the 90s is all the clean guys who could never hope to sniff a medal with guys like hicham dominating track!
LET THAT SINK IN....
just sayin wrote:i doubt it...3000m isn't the biggest deal in track
you clearly weren't watching track in '90s
3k was a big deal back then
every elite 1500 or 5k guy wanted that record
I think someone who might surprise you but possibly could have done when younger is AJ Acosta. He had the unique blend of speed and endurance necessary to accomplish it. But I think his head bit messed up. What a talent.

I SURE WAS
I REMEMBER VIVIDLY THE GREAT DOPED 150Os 5000s and 10000s
LESS SO THE 3000m
