Fracture? Seems odd that with a fracture he would use that leg to bear his weight when getting back up and then sit with it twisted under him.

A ekiden would be a interesting addition indeed. An great idea!
I never would have guessed that the team would be DQed if someone dropped out. What an shocker!
What is an Ekiden?
What is an Ekiden?
People should never help anyone who is not smart enough to look up simple information themselves.
I said it before. Focussing on endurance while neglecting STRENGTH is a big mistake. This guy ended up with chicken legs that simply couldn't take the pounding from a simple road run.
Still believe you get great overall FUNCTIONAL FITNESS from running? Think again.

A+
I love the idea of the Ekiden but it wouldn't fly with so many people (no individual champ!!!). I could see it being an interesting idea for a regular XC meet, or maybe something like ECACs on the east coast.

Tell me about it. You can see the benefits of CF style sprints in this video. You just don't want to do them for any longer than about 60 yards.

To add to what I said, I have to admit that I wouldn't take a pounding from him even with a fractured leg. ;)
We were thinking this fall the NCAA should switch to an Ekiden once every 4 years at NCAAs. In an Ekiden, you know who is winning the team battle all the time, makes for much better tv.
But then we thought, "But you don't get the individual champion and what happens if someone drops out?" In America teams regular have DNFs.
Now we know what happens.

A Kenyan fractured his leg in Japan's 2-day collegiate championship, the Hakone Ekiden and had to drop out. He showed up the next day on crutches, bowed to the team and apologized over and over.
The video of the actual race is pretty brutal of seeing him try to continue:

Great drama though.

QWOP!
Complete total BS.
I expect sepukku and nothing else.
What has become of Japan?!
Legally we can't haze, torture, and break limbs of student-athletes in the United States like they can do in Japan and societies where there is still a reserved military class in the population.
This guy is clearly not as bad "butt" (because Letsrun won't let me use another word) as the guy mentioned below.
"The Lion men s cross country team continued their domination of the MIAA, winning their seventh league title in the last eight years and third in a row, when Southern took home the title in Kirksville. Dustin Dixon and Dustin Miller finished 1-2 at the MIAA meet as the Lions placed four runners in the top 11 and all five scoring runners in the top 16. The Lions would go on to host the NCAA South Central Regional and the Division II National Championships at the Missouri Southern cross country course. The Lions defeated eventual national champion Abilene Christian to take home the regional title and placed 12th in the National Meet. Dixon finished the last 1,500 meters of the national race with a broken bone in his leg, but still placed 21st to be named All-American."
Seeing this post made me remember the race mentioned in the quotes. Dixon either broke his fibula or tibia in the same location the Kenyan is grabbing, I can't remember which one. I was not near him during the time of the break, but those that were heard a massive "pop" sound when it did actually break. I cannot remember the place he was in at the time of the break, but I do remember he only lost 4 places after his bone broke so if he placed 21st, that would put him in 17th position when his leg broke.
This my friends is an example of ballerness! Never mind what that did to the rest of his athletic career, guy is still BA.
ballerness? what the hell does ballerness mean?
And you can say bad ass, don't be scared, child.

Hi idiotfit. I thought you went away.
Anyway, the reason I even replied was to tell you about the day I saw a guy yank his bicep clear off the bone trying to carry a heavy weight. I've been telling you meatheads for years focusing on strength while neglecting ENDURANCE is a big mistake. Now go away.
Here is a link if you don't believe me. (last entry)
To solve the issue of "no individual champion", why not make each team run their #1 runner on the lead off leg so they an compete head to head. Winner of stage 1 is the individual champion. The only real issue I could see here is if one team has two legit contenders for the individual crown.
What the? I'm curious how you were able to use that A-word in your post? Letsrun isn't allowing me to do so stating my post contains offensive material in a phrase I would take as a compliment. Really, what the?
