Tinman:
I was lucky enough to meet Steve Jones at the Runner's Roost in Boulder one Saturday afternoon in 1997, and he mentioned that he was in good shape, despite not doing much mileage. He said that he never took much stock in mileage but rather quality running. I asked him what that meant. To him, that meant doing either fartleks or solid aerobic runs (he used a different word, but I can't remember it. It must have been Welsh.). I said (ignorant of his previous training from his elite days in the 80s) something about Frank Shorter running 150 miles per week and he replied, yeah, that is would have been two of my weeks.
I read that Steve Jones ran only 40 minutes on his easy days (3 per week).
You are right, I did talk to Steve Jones, and he gave me his email, to which I sent and received a couple emails over the summer after I met him. Then, I moved and don't know what happened to some of my stuff that had phone numbers and emails. Anyway, the point is this: Jones was interested in quality aerobic running, and for him that meant doing lots of fartlek running and two fast 90 minute runs per week, plus other shorter fartlek workouts. He ran 40 minutes easy, only one run, three days per week, according to his published logbooks, but he said to me that he usually ran 6 miles - which at his level would be less than 40 minutes.
Malmo:Yeah, Steve Jones has an insight on his training, and he lurks here. As he told me, and gave me permission to say it, he is a consistant "100 miles a week" runner.
According to Jones, he is a consistent 100mpw trainer, who rarely goes above 115mpw. He told me so, and told me I could tell you as well.
Deek(after the 2:07 in Chicago):"I was pretty surprised he (Jones) was able to keep going. In the clinic yesterday Steve was telling everybody how he hadn't been doing as much mileage this year, hadn't been doing his long runs, and I thought, 'Oh, good, he'll really struggle over those last few miles'"
so what is right now, is Mr.Jones schizophrenic?
