finally got up the nerve later in the day to ask how many days ago she bought it. they have a 30 day cancellation policy, so suggested to see if she can switch it to Running Times as it's more up my alley...

You're a loser.
+1 vote for @ss of the day!
You couldn't just say thank you for the thoughtful gift?
Where is this "alley?"
i know. i immediately bit my lip and said "thanks this is great!". but i couldn't contain myself, especially after reading about the 30 day cancellation window/chance to switch to Running Times. as far as what my "alley" is, I'd rather read race reports, training articles, and interviews with runners in Running Times than spend time in Runner's World alley reading about "The 109 Best Foods For Runners" or "Lose 10lbs the Right Way" (actually RW cover headlines btw). on a related note, i haven't had a magazine subscription since "SI for Kids"...and i already read RT online...so if i end up with no subscription, aren't i doing the earth a favor by reducing the waste of printing an extra 12 issue of RW/RT per year??? albeit at the expense of my sister's feelings, but being in a small town in the midwest she really needs to get with the times & realize magazines/newspapers are dead.

Just appreciate the thoughtful gift and shut your pie hole. If you read RT on line, then no need to switch subscriptions. Put RW in the bathroom and a browse through it while sitting enjoying a good BM.

What are you, a 20 year old idiot or are you actually this much of an obtuse child.
My hope is this is a troll attempt, otherwise my sympathies to your family that has to deal with you.
It's obvious you haven't had a magazine subscription in a while. While Runners World is skewed towards more average runners, it always has a few articles that any runner can learn from. Some of the best articles about running in the last year have been in Runners World. (Letsrun usually finds out about them 4-6 weeks late and puts the article on the front page). They haven't been putting results in either for years since you can get any result you want instantly on the net.
My advice would be to keep the Runners World and subscribe to Running Times also. It only costs 1.10/magazine with a 2 year subscription.
A couple other good magazines are Trail Runner and Marathon and Beyond. Always some great running stories.
lol. My sister-in-law gave me Dean K's book "Ultramarathon Man."
Don't read it if you don't want to. Problem solved.
I have a lifetime subscription to Runner's World. Many issues have at least one very interesting article. It also keeps me up on the changes in running below the top.
No doubt RW's target audience weights heavily toward beginners, and they target serious runners with RT. However, RW tries to cover all running and usually has at least one good long article that serious competitive runners would enjoy.
As for asking your sister to cancel it, don't be an @ss. Just read as much of each issue as you are interested in.
I would cancel it. It's YOUR Christmas present, not hers.
Sometimes they have really good feature stories!
I agree with the "put it in your bathroom" thing. Or a nice coffee table prop.
RT is far superior to RW, this is true. The value in your sister's gift, however, is not in what was given. Yes?

Best and most succinct answer so far.
Runner's World actually has some good excerpts on elite runners once in a while, as long as you get past the hobbyjogger advice.

If you aren't making a living off of running, you are a hobbyjogger.
I am 18 years old, and I usually get what I want. Am I suppose to keep my mouth shut and take Runner's World Magazine? That is crazy stuff!

You have it rough! You have a sister put thought into a gift that tried to give you something you might actually enjoy based on your interests. She must be a saint to that to someone who is completely unappreciative.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
