Hey everyone
I'm a junior girl in college, running for my D3 college xc and track teams. My coach (same one for xc and track) knows nothing about coaching distance runners. He didn't run in high school or college, but competed in field events.
The whole distance track team, 800-5k runners, does the same exact workout, with us in different groups based on our speed.
Our workouts are the same every single week. We do one on Monday, one on Wednesday. The same two every single week. They are workouts like
1x1200, 2x1000, 2x800 and
4x800
Our coach gives us goal times for these, which is basically our mile race pace. He never gives us how much rest we are supposed to be taking, and when we ask him he just says to go when you feel ready...so we've been taking full recoveries. We literally do these two workouts for the whole entire season, november-april/may
Our coach also doesnt give us any training plan over winter break, and tells us to train with our high school teams at home even if the training is drastically different because "it will be good to run with other people"...he doesn't have a plan for the season at all.
My freshman and sophomore year, I decided to give our coach the benefit of the doubt and follow his program. After not improving on my high school PRs at all, I want to change my training.
I'm trying to peak for a meet in mid february...what should I be doing now? I've ordered daniel's training plan and am waiting for it to arrive in them mail at the moment. I just feel lost because running was basically my life in high school, and I expected more out of college. I go to one of the top 10 colleges in the nation, yet our coach knows nothing. I thought the coaching would be halfway decent.
