Kawauchi ran 2:09:15 today in Japan just two weeks after running 2:09:05. He previously held the world mark for quickets sub-2:10s at 42 days.
For the year, that's 11 marathons for Yuki. 4 sub-2:10s and another at 2:10:00.
Studly.
The US had one single performance under 2:10:00 all year.

Well, two things he may have going for him--
1) Extreme preponderance of ST muscle fibers, which are much more resistant to trauma than FT muscle fibers. His incredibly slow PRs of 13:58.62 and 29:02.33 would seem to support this.
2) An extremely efficient, "shuffling" running style, with very little up-and-down movement, resulting in less pounding. This also seems to be true--look at the segment at about 35 seconds in:

He's burning the candle at both ends. I predict we'll soon be reading about a string of nagging issues cutting into his training. Though he sure is burning brightly in the meantime.

My gut reaction is exactly this but you do have to consider Kjell-Erik Stahl and Doug Kurtis who were both able to turn out about 10 to 14 high quality marathons a year for 10+ years. Now Kurtis' best was 2:13 and Stahl's was 2:10 so Kawauchi is running faster then them but not massively. A tiny group seem able to do this. Only time will tell.
I am amazed as everyone. These are my questions : Would a sub-2.05 runner be able to race consistently at these speeds over an entire year? If he rested a month and built up to a single marathon effort over six months, how fast would he be able to run? Maybe no faster, I don't know. What do other runners think? Is he potentially an incredibly fast ultra-marathon runner who has yet to discover his true forte?
Does anyone have a list of all of his marathons and times from this year?
It would be interesting to know what type of training he does between these races.

But there are more than two weeks/weekends left in 2013... Who knows what he has planned.
The crazy thing is that he turns himself inside out in these races. He runs all out and often ends up in the medical tent. So he's not "jogging" these races. He's super competitive and can't stand to get beat by anyone.

Even if Ritz, Hall, and Meb juiced to the gills for a full-year, combined they wouldn't have these results. Extremely impressive.
He is running a 10k on New Years (roads I believe).
If more runners were like Kawauchi, marathoning would be a more popular sport

What's he running for? He won't take a contract or any appearance money.
I would be more impressed if he ran one 2:05 than a string of 2:10's.
He's headed for a major injury. But that's his call.
