Well, it appears my original thread was deleted. Mods, please don't delete the thread. It's a genuine question and there's nothing here against the rules. I'm asking for workout advice here because there are many knowledgeable people.
Anyway.
My friend has a bet with someone that he can dunk a basketball. He'd really like to win the bet and asked me how to train for it. I gave him general advice like box jumps, squats, dead lifts, etc. But I don't know much about the right lifts to do either. I just went from the workouts I did that helped me jump higher when I was younger. So I'm coming to the best place I know for this advice: letsrun.
Basically my friend wants a training plan to improve his jumping. He is gonna get a one month gym membership tomorrow. Let's say he were to go to the gym 3-4 times a week, what sort of lifts should he be doing, and how often, and at what reps? As much specificity as you can provide would be greatly appreciated. If you guys can give specific lifts for each day of a weekly lifting cycle, that would be great.
Also, what cross training should he do? He lives up a six-story walk up. Would running up the stairs help?
Finally, what upper body/core work should he do? Should he be doing any upper body lifts in the gym, even though his sole focus is jumping? Which lifts?
For reference, he is ~6 feet tall and 190lbs, but very athletic. He also plans to diet to lose weight. He asked if he should run to lose weight, but I said that would work against his training to jump higher.
Thanks in advance for all the suggestions--you guys, as always, are the best.
