Becky Wade Crushes it for the win at Cal Int'l Marathon

Impressive--I'd say she could be a possible threat in the Olympic Trials. And pretty cool blog.

Way to miss this one Letsrun.com. A seven year old walks a marathon and gets the quote of the day. A US runner WINS a marathon and gets no mention other than full name and race. This was a great debut run for Becky. I remember her as being a very solid runner at Rice, but never really breaking through to the top. This also shows that more US runners need to debut in the marathon when they get out of college instead of spending 5-7 years on the track running anonymous races in Europe.

More US runners need to debut in races they can compete for the win instead of taking a check from a major marathon to run way too fast for 25k to stay with the pack and crash and burn the last 10k. When Becky steps up to a bigger race, she will have an advantage over other top US runners like Kara and Desi--she has won a marathon.

So they can run anonymously in the U.S. instead? She's not getting any real attention for debuting in 2:30. It sucks. It's a problem with the sport that 2nd tier runners get nothing. Jason Hartmann is a great example.

Seriously. Has anyone ran faster than that this year besides Shalane, Kara and Desi? You'd think Letsrun would be all over this

Was she planning to run CIM all along, or did she plan on running Dallas and had to switch cause of the cancellation? Dallas has added back prize money the past few yrs, although CIM is a better pay day if you win. Just seemed like a Dallas girl would more logically 'debut' in Dallas.

Roy's point is at least she earned $10k here with the win vs. $0 in a no name European steeple race. Plus with the win and a 2:30 under her belt she'll make appearance money for her next several marathons.

Financially it's a no-brained if you have the talent to run marathons. But not everyone does.

No, they are not related. Sean Wade, by the way, is originally from New Zealand. He represented New Zealand in the 1996 Olympic marathon. He also won the 2003 Houston Marathon.

The money is definitely in the marathon. The E. Africans figured that out about a decade ago and stopped making runners prove themselves on the track before moving up to the marathon. I think US runners need to do the same to be competitive. I also think a lot of US marathon talent is wasted on the track because people coming out of NCAAs think that they should have a career on the track before moving up to the marathon. Too many runners burn out and quit before trying to move up when they should have just gone straight to the marathon. Desi and Becky were solid runners in the NCAAs. Had they tried to make an Olympic team on the track, they may have never done what they have done and will do at the marathon. Who knows. Maybe Shalane and Kara left their best marathons on the track.

Is Steeple a track event? Because Becky tried last year but came up short in the Trials.
