I remember when we went through this in the 80s...we lost men's xc but some how track survived. they didn't do us the dignity of announcing it this early. they waited until finals week in the spring.
track is dead.
Go to college for your education, not for sport. If you love the sport, form a club.
It will be more enjoyable, and achieve basically the same thing (minus the scholarships - which in track are pretty non-existent)
When I was in college on a full ride at d1, the rugby team had much more fun than we did, and they also had great grades.

It's not the Big Time programs that are the issue, it's the wannabes. These schools see what football can buy and think, "If only we had a program like Penn State/Alabama/Texas etc, we'd have beaucoup bucks too". So they jump around conferences, plow money into their horrible football teams, cut sports, but ultimately they still suck. There can only be so many elite football programs unless you convince other countries to start playing the game. I just hope schools start to realize this before track's gone from D1.
How can you cut rowing programs at a Philadelphia school? Wow.
Baseball and Softball at a D1 School? Sad.

They aren't in the Big East. But on to the real issues.
This really does suck, and I very much agree with the comment about Cosby crying somewhere.
What I would really love to see is some decent size school with some athletic prominence make a point of cutting back the size of the football pool (i.e. drop to 65 or 70 scholarships instead of the allowed 85) allowing them to keep opportunities in other sports.
Even better, if the NCAA changed the number. Not like it would affect the popularity of the sport if games like Auburn/Alabama had 140 scholarship athletes on the sidelines instead of 170. Pretty sure the stadium would still be packed and I'm betting the TV ratings would be about the same.

It's only a matter of time before most D1 schools sponsor only football and basketball (which are their main sources of revenue) and enough women's sports to balance out the scholarships for Title IX. The only way there will be more is if there are NCAA or conference minimums to maintain their affiliations. D1 athletics are a business and they are going to keep narrowing their investments to the sports that generate revenue. What has happened at Temple (and other schools) is going to become a more and more frequent occurrence.

This is a financial problem that has been going on for decades as colleges have chased the chimera of network dollars for football even now as with Temple as the money pot is melting down as cable is abandoned and the media dollars are set to dry up. The southern universities in the SEC long since abandoned most of their sports except football and basketball, but a few others hold on like cross country -- and mainly women's cross country -- is kept alive and the coach is givening his or her marching orders to bring in 40 or 50 female runners or joggers to put on the roster so Title IX mandates can be satisfied for the bloated football teams. And of course, even at Temple with today's announcement, a dig is thrown at the need to keep the women's representation equal. Temple did have far more sports than many Eastern colleges in its situation, but the school's need to worship at the altar of football really doomed them here, because they just have no chance there. Sad.
Us college coaches need to step up our game and start bringing something tangible to the table or this trend will continually worsen. If you have used the excuse of "let our results do the talking" then you have no clue how the world works. Lets wake up and do something to make this sport a crowd pleaser/money maker.

Sounds terrible but I agree. Graduation rates for high-major basketball and football teams are atrocious. 4 years of undergrad I saw three basketball players charged with felonies, five expulsions, and only half the players graduate. Meanwhile I was a respectable DI runner, got great grades, and currently in medical school.
Temple, UCONN, & UMASS are schools that come to mind that have no business playing FBS football. These school would be better off using the money they flush down the football drain by improving the academics of the school and providing a great atmosphere for students who will be willing to donate as alumni.
Lambs to slaughter. This is what happens when an conference footprint becomes a financial sinkhole.
