All you ever hear is that coaching is all about paying your dues and getting experience before you move up in the ranks. So I'm wondering who's bucking that trend and getting Head XC/TF experience at the D1 level at a young age? Is it more common than everyone makes it out to be?
I know of some young Head Coaches, but Id like to see what LetsRun can come up with.
So post a head coach, where they are, and age.
Ryan Vanhoy at Ole Miss is pretty young, I think 25 or so. Pretty young for a coach in the sec. I can't think of any others that young. It is the sec which obviously isn't the most dominant conference but isn't too horrible. Pretty impressive for him.
Brian O’Neal is the head coach at Ole Miss. Ryan is the Assist. coach.
I was 24yrs old when promoted to Head Coach Men's/Women's Cross Country and Track & Field and at the time was the youngest full-time DI coach in the nation. That was in 2002.

Matt Kerr was in his late 20s when he started at BC ...proof that a young coach is the worst thing for a program.

Joe Lynn at Mizzou is fairly young and doing a nice job in a place without a prior distance culture. Not the youngest at early 30's, but worth mentioning. I believe he is head men's and women's XC.

"Head" xc coach still has to report to HEAD Track coach for budget, scholarships, etc.

False, Brian O'Neal (the sprint coach/head coach) has nothing to do with coaching any distance athletes. Ryan VanHoy coaches the distance athletes during the fall, winter, and spring.You are obviously not a college coach.If you believe that Robert Johnson at Oregon coaches the distance runners in any capacity (though he IS actually listed as the head xc coach) you are very wrong.

Brad wick of sjsu or the former boise state coach. Although petersmeyer is head coach of xc, wick is technically the head coach because hes the one who does everything and petersmeyer does jumps and multis
Missouri not having a prior distance culture?? I mean, they may not have been a powerhouse and put all their money into that area but Missouri has had good middle distance and distance runners over many decades.
Ryan Cole out of Arizona State is the head womens cross country coach and coaches the womans distances on the track. He can't be a crack over 30.
All these "head coaches" of distance/cross country handle none of the budgeting, scholarship allocations, disciplining, etc of a Track/XC program; all handled by the HEAD track coach,
I believe Chuck Vogel was the youngest Div 1 Head Coach in NCAA history at the University of Dayton in '92 not sure how old he was but would guess 25 since he graduated from ND in '90
John Kenworthy coach at Sienna College looks to be 25, in the MAAC. Another young one.
