Rudisha lives in Kenya- they know a little bit more about sports than we do.

Don't get me wrong. I think it is a positive that runners like Symmonds do fun stuff. I appreciate the way they hang out at Millrose and road races, take pictures. I think Bernard Lagat's Speed Golf is fun. But your worth is determined by the product you put on the track, and Symmonds has a good product.

All I am saying is that you don't hear Rudisha talk about training for the Beer Mile.

Symmonds does not have the option of setting a new WR in the 800. Nor does he have the option of winning an Olympic Gold. As such, his best chance for "lasting fame" lies in the Beer Mile.

Nick is doing great. He is a freethinker like me and stepping outside the box and bringing much needed hype and attention to our sport. I think it is fantastic. Track lacks fanfare and a lot of the posters on here are old hypocrite fuddy duddys that bit%h and moan about not enough interest but in the same breath discourage the hype.

No signals of Nigel Amos last year (I think he was injured in World University Games), no signals of Kitum...and subpar performances from young Kenyans (Jeremiah Mutai, Ferguson, Rotich, Anthony Chemut, etc)

Do you not remember Cabada's quote from the other day? He asked, "Will people remember you 30 years from now?" I couldn't tell you off the top of my head who the 3rd place finisher for 800m was at the World Championships 30+ yrs ago. Who gives a hoot! Rudisha is the best in the World, and he will be remembered for being the best in the World, whether he or someone else eventually breaks the World Record.

If you're going to be the best at something, you're more likely to be remembered 30 years from now. I don't blame Nick for wanting to use his ability to be the best in the World in an odd-ball record, a feat that is more likely to be remembered (and by more people) than his Olympic/World Champs feats.

Would we be talking about him if he hadn't mentioned the beer mile? No. Mission accomplished.

Symmonds might consider that probably all the hard core running fans checked out both videos, and that the beer mile simply added 6,000 non-running fans.

Sure I did. I started running that year and was an 800m runner. The next year Cruz won the Olympics and I was very aware that he was the guy that got third the year before.
