Backing out of a job you just started

Just tell them it's business, and move on. They won't sweat it.

They'll drop you so fast it will make your head spin if they ever have any troubles with the bottom line. There's no reason you should treat them any differently.

Them-large organization. You-23 year old punk. They won't remember you in a month. You likely won't face any consequences if you bail. That being said, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Who cares if you burn the original bridge? Whatever you do you are burning one bridge.

If you don't take the newest offer you burn that bridge too. And since you think and it looks like the best offer take it!!

Unlike most firms, they don't let people go that easily. During the recession, they reduced staff by having a hiring freeze, so people who left wouldn't be replaced. To cut costs even further, each employee had to take two days a month off without pay, and unused sick leave or vacation time couldn't be turned into cash. But nobody was laid off.

So that's why I may consider going back someday. Leaving after 5 weeks could mean that the option of going back would no longer exist for me.

If they only offered an additional 2-3k, I wouldn't take it. If it's 5k or more, I'd go for it and be honest with your supervisor about the reason for the move.

Yes. If you leave the option to go back someday may not be there. But if you don't leave the new job will CERTAINLY not be there.

Not only do you get a better job if you switch but you still have a backup possibility.

take new job = Gauranteed job + possible bridge still intact

stay with job = guaranteed bridge burnt + guaranteed old job

and on top of this the new job is better. seriously do not understand your logic here can you please explain

In a few years, nobody will remember, anyways. They probably would hire you back if you are qualified for the gig.

It's not an usual situation. Let the current job know, they may match the offer or they may not.

That will look interesting on your future resume. Good interview fodder. "So, Mr. Johnson. Why did you work at company X for only 5 weeks?"

Just wondering, but why would you go back and work for this employer in the future?
