Hey, all you high school XC experts out there...a question.
Why would any top-rated high school athlete who potentially could qualify for Foot Locker and wasn't a member of a qualifying team for NXN, want to run in the cold and slop of Portland rather than sunny San Diego?
Just curious.
Both gives Free airline flight and gear.

I've been to both and the NXN experience is much, much more fun. Obviously San Diego is warmer, drier, sunnier and the course is better, but it's the overall experience that makes NXN better. It's not every day you have one of the biggest, most influential, companies in the world treating you like a king or queen for a long weekend.
I agree with riley. I have been to both (4 times to FL and once to NXN) and the NXN experience is far superior. Will not even consider FL again.
Because the NXN regionals are often more accessible (closer to home and earlier), and unless you're used to good weather all year 'round Portland weather isn't too bad most years (although, granted, San Diego is like a vacation from fall/winter weather).
Because I was on a top team. A top-ranked individual on a good team will go to NXN, period. A top-ranked individual whose team isn't going to NXN will take their own preference. More and more that is making NXN the deeper race.
Oh, and because I am not afraid of mud, and Portland is not cold compared to where I live.
IMO last year marked the tipping of the scale in terms of the caliber of the races towards NXN, footlocker will never be what it was again

Seem to remember Baxter and Cain going 1,2 last year at NXN, hard to top those two.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but its a default we are talking about boy/mens running unless states otherwise.... this Cain non-sense is silly, why would I want to watch someone I am faster than...

That's how I feel about the boys, guess no reason to watch slower people run.
Footlocker is just about kids.

So you didn't read the first post, is what you're saying.
I have no dog in the fight but surface impressions lead to believe FL may be the better overall experience. I'm saying this as someone who's ECoast which makes a difference probably.
So far, I've see a few of the Nike elite girls (campers) are going to FL regionals. That can't be what Nike would like to see after these girls summered in Eugene?

To run against the best.
In my part of NY State Footlocker is now for people who can't make it at Nike.
The problem is:
Nike takes the best teams, the best teams have top runners.
Take NY- F-M, Toga, Northport, Liverpool will all run Nike- They have the top runners so Footlocker is watered down.
The only people here saying Footlocker is better are 25+ yr olds. Any kid that says they want to go to Footlocker over NXN has been influenced by a coach or parent or local runner who regales them with tales of how amazing Footlocker is/was (and it truly used to be great).
The only thing Footlocker has going for it is that it is in San Diego. But even though Footlocker puts the kids up in the glamorous hotel del, that's got nothing on Nike renting out an entire hotel and filling it to the rim with high schoolers.
Footlocker is somewhere between Myspace and Facebook. NXN is Twitter/Instagram/Vine.
Footlocker is VHS, NXN is Bluray.
Footlocker is Red Lobster, NXN is well, anything is better than Red Lobster.
The Footlocker gear is 2nd rate, their guest athletes are 2nd rate, the field of athletes is beaching 2nd rate as well.
They still hold Footlocker?
Footlocker talent is still superior. It has been less than a year and those guys are already making waves. The Big Cheese already has an NCAA title and he seemed to like footlocker a lot the last two years.

Just checked the names of the freshmen who are 2013 Division 1 All-Americans:
Erin Finn - ran FL regionals didn't qualify because of sickness. Finished 2nd at FL Nats her junior yr.
Bethany Brown - finished 11th at FL NE regionals
Megan Curram - finished 14th at FL Nationals.
I don't believe any ran the qualifying for Nike.
Ed Ches - Won FL nats and NCAA nats
Ben Saarel - 4th at FL Nats
Patrick Tiernan - foreigner ran neither
Malachy Schrobilgen - foreigner? ran neither
So I guess Footlocker still is getting some quality runners.
