Here's the deal: So right now I'm a sophmore I run 2:16, 4:56, 17:50. I have just about no future in track. And to be quite honest I don't enjoy cross country. This is mostly due to the fact that I prefer asphalt and getting away from the training schedule of my coach. Just some info on my summer training: started at 42 miles a week, peaked at 60 and then started doing workouts. Do you guys think this is a good/bad idea. Thanks.
You're probably not physically developed enough for marathon abuse. Stick to your HS team. Listen to your coach.
You gotta build up your mileage greater than 60mpw to successfully run a marathon in a decent time, unless you're like the guy on this board that just did a 2:37 on 35mpw or some crazy thing
Take advantage of the unique opportunity to be on a high school team, train with others close to your age and ability, work with a coach, compete in a Fall season of XC and a Spring season of Track. You will develop running speed, and you will learn how to race. Your body may still be developing if you are a sophomore. You won't have this opportunity after you finish HS, and if you don't run in HS, you likely won't be prepared to run in college. Marathoners typically hit their peak in their late 20's. You'll have plenty of time to train for a marathon after HS and college.
Even if you're never going to be a 15:00/9:20 guy in HS, work on your speed now. If you have any ambitions for the marathon, and it sounds like you do, remember that your potential for racing at 26.2 miles is also a function of shorter distance times.
You have potential as a sub 4:40 miler later this spring, save the marathon for later!
my senior year of HS my PRs were 4:56 and 17:52, about the same as you. fast forward 2-3 years and i'm running 5ks at my HS mile PR pace. keep at it. you're just a sophomore, you'll get better.
i did exactly what you planned to do. i graduated high school then ran a marathon. turns out im not great at those either, ran 3:10. then i realized that i need to be fast at shorter distances if i ever want to run 2:30 for the full.
maybe you're high school's program isnt great, but stick to it, and run in college. dont do a marathon until you at least have been running for 5 years.
