I am a junior in high school and I go to a public school with cross country and outdoor track teams, but no winter/indoor track team. My friends and I have pushed for a winter team since we were in eighth grade but it never fit into our school's budget. To stay fit during the winter I've played basketball since seventh grade and I've been a benchwarmer every year, so this year I decided to not play and instead I am forming a winter running club at my school with the intention of hopefully getting a winter track team at my high school next year and helping my teammates and I train for the outdoor season in the spring.
I only started to train and run seriously in August of this year in preparation for cross country and as a result I dropped my XC 5k PR from 18:49 to 17:06 and road 5k PR from 18:21 to 16:35, and even then I was doing 25-35 miles per week with three speed work sessions all XC season. This winter I'm hoping to get up to 40-55 miles per week and that pretty much consists of 1 hour runs for 4 days, 1 day of 10k tempo, and 1 day of speed work (XC hill loops or track sessions) with Friday being my off day. In January I will add in hurdle work once a week. I'm planning on balancing coaching the club and doing my own running by coaching immediately after school, doing half of my daily running with my team, and then after practice doing the second half.
My question is this: In conjunction to helping coach my winter running club, is my training to prepare for the spring season good? My goal for this spring is to get my 3k steeplechase time around 10:00 and mile time to under 4:45. Is there any suggestions that you guys can give me?
Also, I will do a follow-up post in a few months about if the club was successful or not.
