How to make 100k+ a year?

Find a line of work that you're good at, interests you, and has the potential to lead to a $100K income. Then spend 5-10 years working at it.

Your mistake is thinking solely about the income instead of the career field in which you want to accomplish something. I'm not dismissing the importance of money, but you have to like your work and be good at it in order to have a fighting chance to make that much. If you hate the work you will not have the motivation to excel at it, and if you don't have the aptitude to excel at it, you will never be able to overcome that deficiency. I definitely understand and while I agree, I also fear falling in love with a field that yields horrid earning potential. This was my issue with coaching. My plan was more to find out about jobs that make the cut and then sift through them to see if there's anything that's really clicked with me before.

Go into white collar sales. I can make 100k with my eyes closed.

I have a job that has paid on average over 150k over the past 15 years with the last 3 years almost 230k. I have now been in the industry over 23 years which in 1 more year will be half my life. I hate my job, I hate the travel, I hate the stress, I hate being a flake to my friends and family because I can't commit to holidays or vacations. I have a 450K house that I owe about 150K that I bought 7 years ago. This year I won't have spent 3 months there. Problem is I've been doing this so long I don't have many transferrable skills that could get me a job making 40K a year.

Most of my friends who make over 100K are miserable. My buddy who is a low level manager with Blue Bell ice cream makes maybe 50k a year. This guys is happy, has stock options and a pension that will provide him a comfortable retirement.

You can make $100K as a coach if you write books, attract elite athletes, develop a following, start a blog that gets lots of traffic, etc. You could make coaching into a successful enterprise.

I was about to argue this until I saw "and has the potential to lead to a $100K income." Which is why I'm posting here, seeing which do. I'm not really looking for the ones that have entry level pay of $100k+, which seem rare and may have standards that I simply can't meet.

Seems rather unlikely, an unreliable option for me. The risk is so high, I can either make barely enough to get by as a HS coach or end up in the situation you present. I'm not saying the chances are great in any other 100k+ situation, but they certainly seem like a better bet than that one.

I've seen this a lot, too. It kind of puts me off, but at the same time, not -every- job with earnings at this level can be that bad, right? What exactly is it that you do, if you don't mind me asking? If it's stressful like that, it has to be something I love. For a while I've been considering Computer Science or perhaps Engineering. I really enjoy problem solving, but I don't know if I love math enough to make a career out of it. Weird, I know. With these options I'd be pretty set, but it's always good to know more. I'm assuming you're in the business field?

100k is easy if you have a good degree from a decent school and a couple years of experience in your field.

100k is even easier if you are a good entrepreneur

now where it gets tough is breaking out of the 200k-250k range

auditor at big 4 accounting, investment banking analyst, corporate attorney at major law firm, operations at a bulge bracket bank, business development at a major company, sales and trading, equity research analyst, actuary, management consultant, petroleum engineer, the list goes on and on...

The only problem is most of these jobs (as the poster alluded to) you are working a TON. Early morning or late nights, weekends and vacations. You will easily clear 100K in most of the fields, even at the junior ranks.

Get a government job or work for a government contractor. Pretty much everyone in DC makes $150K+.

Hm. So the best way is business jobs that consume your life? Doesn't seem like a good idea. Why have money when you have no time to enjoy it? Are there any that don't put such a deathgrip on you? Though I guess those would be nearly impossible to get, down to the luck factor, huh?

I wont' lie, I am greedy. Not ashamed, either. I think it's perfectly fine to want to be well off. But the main reason I responded to this was: Plumber/Electrician

Really? Not sure if you're pulling my leg or those are actually lucrative fields. Maybe talking about the self-employed ones who own plumbing businesses?

There's no such thing as a free lunch. People love to feel sorry for doctors and how hard they work but there are plenty of jobs where your paycheck has a linear relationship with your billing and long hours are expected by the people who are skinning your back for profit.
