In my experience, even running very slowly will help make you stronger in the long run. I'm a 2:50ish marathoner, and when I'm in good shape I usually run very slow 10-milers the day after my long run. It's also hard to do decent weekly mileage if you're not running the day after your long run.
Losens you up. Gets the blood flowing.
I always feel better if I run that next day instead of taking it off.
You'll usually recover faster if you do something light the day after a long effort or a hard effort. If you tend to get overuse injuries, you could substitute 20-30 minutes of really easy pool running instead of a run the day after a long run. But actual jogging is better if you're used to the mileage.
just to prove your are a tough SOB. It looks good on the log book. And greatly enhances self esteem just to name a few other benefits.

LOL
While perhaps increasing one's chance for injury and prolonging recovery, the benefit comes in the muscle fiber recruitment. You can check out the recent article written by John Kellog that is still on the news page (you will need to scroll a bit) for a full explanation of muscle fiber recruitment.
makes you tough, adapted to running even after hard days, and then when your family and relatives ask you how much did you run today and you say "15", and they're like "o &$#%" and then your like " im running 11 tommorow" and they piss their pants
