I only run 50 mpw but within a couple of weeks getting new shoes I notice that the upper portion of the outer side of my left shoe is wearing out. In a month or so the sole is completely gone and holes develop. The other shoe doesn't have this problem.
Obviously I am landing on that side with that foot or doing something else weird. Is there a particular type of shoe I should be looking for, given this strange gait?
You may have some sort of cross-over gait, maybe from your left leg being a little longer and having to cross over center to maintain a balanced stride.
It didn't seem to slow Pre down much- that was exactly the reason for his stride pattern. Watch clips of his races and watch his footstrike closely; you will see his left leg going past the center over to his right side at footstrike.
As for the shoe wear, just go for something with a durable outsole, such as the Adidas Adios models have. Dense carbon outsoles wear much longer than soft blown rubber, and the Adios has them in strategic locations in order to keep total shoe weight low.

Ouch.
I have the exact same problem. Right shoe looks great after 6 months, left shoe looks like sh*t after 3 weeks. I've consciously tried to change my foot strike to no avail.

I'll tell you what it means. It means you are biased against your right shoe. And, I for one will not stand for it. for years, the right show has been neglected. The left shoe did this, the left shoe did that. I'm getting sick of it.
Why is the right she neglected? Who knows. A left winged, left side, left shoe bias?
Possibly.
What can we do as a society to help the right shoes in this world? We can ban together, and make a stand. A physical and symbolic stand that gives EQUAL weight to the right shoe. A stand that would make a podiatrist proud, and make the right side, right shoe smile and yes, possibly bring a tear to their eye, or if you'll allow, lace eyehole.
