That's the exact equivalent to me to paying 5 grand to run Boston not qualifying and then tatting it on yourself. So f'n stupid. Anyone else agree or think he earned it?

1. It doesn't look like he tatted Kona on himself. He probably had a tattoo artist do it.
2. He finished and is proud of his accomplishment. Who gives a shit what others think?
3. So what. It's his body.

I thought he did qualify for Kona. If not, that's pretty damn cheesy. Not that I have any respect for the ironman tattoo anyway but that cheapens it a bit.

OP, who the hell cares?! Get off facebook and concern yourself with something a little more important. Damn, how boring is your life?!

Yeah, get off facebook and spend more time on LR bashing people for having boring lives.
Yeah, that sure was a good "bashing" I gave him, wasn't it?!
I can't wait for Hines to starts stiff-arming some of you TriBlogging Arbiter of Truth Justice Haters as he barrels down the home stretch in KONA!!!
The columnist is really making an ass. Sponsor exemptions are common in events and Ironman has been doing this for a long long time.
Is it really any different than the example he uses of the woman with the brain tumors? No is my answer

Neither one should get in, either you qualify of you don't. Can't get in? Get over it and do something else.
P.S. Ward is a major douche for getting that tattoo. Huge.
Wooo chocolate milk!
He beat like 500 people... although including a lot who DNF'd... for what that's worth...
This ...

does not jive with this ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hines_Ward#Triathlon_Career
The latter says he is "a current triathlete". His wiki page details his "triathlon career".
It should say that he is a former triathlete, just like it says that he is a "former American football wide receiver". It is pretty sad when two races constitute a special section on your wiki page, especially when he has accomplished so much in a pro sport.
Sad that someone thought it was important to frame it like that. He is dabbling in triathlon, just like he might play basketball occasionally to stay fit.
That is a pretty decent time though, for someone who has no background in any of those sports.
Take it up with Ironman, then. It's their race, their decision. I think you people just like being mad sometimes.

I guess elite marathoners should not be allowed to debut at Boston either
Huh? Are you implying he is an elite Ironman competitor?
Doesn't Boston accept half marathon and 10k times anyway?
Anyone know? I'm pretty sure Chicago does that for it's corrals.

You are bringing far too much hostility and bitterness to this non-issue.
Here's another interpretation of his decision to get this tattoo: This guy, a professional athlete in a genuine pro sport (not triathlon), retired from that sport and turned to a new challenge. He found the challenge so meaningful and difficult that he was proud to be a finisher. He commemorated this with a tattoo.
What is the problem with any of this? If a triathlete took some practice with an NFL team, got whipped but hung in there, and tatted "Pittsburgh Steelers" on his leg afterward, do you think Hines Ward would bash him?
people get far worse tats for far more stupid reasons
for some reason lots of folks who wouldn't otherwise get inked love to get the 'M-dot" Ironman tattoo
for a big guy, he did OK. 13 hours isn't a great time, nor is it awful
i say good for him.
