NY Times: Fat people are no different than anorexics - both suffer from eating disorders

Some people don't even think it's a crime to be fat. Hahaha. What's next, we should just let people look any way they want?

No shit. Eating too little is a disorder. Eating too much is a disorder. Who would have guessed?

Well, yeah, in the DSM, for all intensive porcupines, criminals could have a "stealing other people's stuff" disorder.

The problem is that you can't read. Ask a grown up to read you the story you linked and once you understand what it really says, then you can come back to discuss it.

Neither anorexia nor obesity can be described as an "eating disorder." Anorexia is a mental disorder. Obesity is simply the result of weakness and, as an obese person, I can speak with authority on the matter.

I used to be 80 pounds lighter than I am now, but I quit training seriously and kept eating crap. Even now, I frequently choose pub grub and beer over a healthy diet. My choice; my weakness; my mistakes.

I'm a socially liberal person, but I have no sympathy for anorexics or my fellow fat people.

Anorexia is straight up a mental illness. I have the utmost sympathy for those suffering from anorexia and their families. A lot of overweight people may suffer from depression (there is a positive correlation between the two...and it works both ways: being overweight can make you at risk to develop depression, and being depressed can make you at risk to be overweight), but being fat by itself is not a disorder.

In many states, some one third of the adult population is "too weak" to live a healthy lifestyle.

In many states, some one quarter of the child population is "too weak" to live a healthy lifestyle.

If such a large percentage of the population suffers from such "weakness," wouldn't you think that it is not "weakness" but rather "normal?" Wouldn't you think that the environment needs to be changed so that a larger percentage of the population can live healthily?

Nor is being skinny, but anorexia is.

The article does not say that obesity binge eating disorder. It's just that binge eating disorder is one possible cause of obesity, just like anorexia is one possible cause of being severely underweight. Both are eating disorders. Think of binge eating disorder like bulimia but without the purging. The binging is uncontrollable and the person feels terrible after. But no purging follows.

Just because something appears in the NY Times doesn't mean it's the opinion of the NY Times. It's not like the NYT got together and decided to announce this.

It's just the New York Times. They are the Fox News of print "journalism" (or "opinions?")

No one really takes it seriously anyways.
