Why the DNF in the final?
Why the DNF in the final?

Women's 4x100m Relay Final 21:49 But what happened to the Americans??!! Anchor leg Lauryn Williams apparently takes off too soon and Marion Jones can't reach her hand to pass her the baton... Williams doesn't even bother finishing!!!
Actually, I just read that Williams was already out of the handoff zone by the time she got the baton from Marion. Between Marion and Paula, today leaves a sick feeling in my stomach.
Must be drugs to DNF after all they have almost always won
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- A failed baton handoff doomed the U.S. 400-meter relay team, terminating Marion Jones' last chance for a medal at the Athens Games. An hour after she finished fifth in the long jump, Jones was unable to make the handoff to 100-meter silver medalist Lauryn Williams midway through the relay.
Williams left too early and Jones could not reach her with the baton until it was too late.
Jamaica won Friday night in a time of 41.73 seconds. Russia won the silver medal at 42.27 seconds. France got the bronze at 42.54 seconds.
Jones, running second, was close to the lead as she approached Williams. But she reached once, shouted as she reached a second time, then finally was able to give the baton to Williams on the third attempt - nearly running into her younger teammate.
By then Williams was already out of the handoff zone. She stopped running, and Jones put her arm around Williams as the two walked to the end of the track.
This is why we need experienced relay runners like Jearl Miles-Clark!!!!
To borrow a page from a certain other Gold medal favorite flopper:
"PRACTICE? We talking about Practice?"
uhhhh........not sure we need Miles Clark in a 4 X 100 relay
I mean in the OTHER relay. I never said she should run the 4 x 100, idiot. Read my post. "We need experienced relay runners like ..."

...and the ladies on the 4 x 100m weren't experienced? The ladies scheduled to run the 4 x 400m aren't experienced?
The experience element in the 4 x 400m is idiotic. Allison Felix should get a slot before Jearl in this Olympics.

Tell that to the many, many US 4x100 relay teams who were "better on paper" but got beat because of poor handoffs...

What does this have to do with JMC running the 4 x 400m?
Marion Jones must have been a somewhat controversial call for the relay. Who were the Relay Coach(es) who put their necks on the line on her behalf?
[from usatf.org]
Discretionary Selection
Relay Team members are the only athletes who will be selected by discretion.
The Relay Coach(es) will recommend to the Head Coach the athletes nominated for the relay pool. The decision will be based on the judgment of the Relay Coach(es) as to athlete's ability to contribute to the success of the relay team at the 2004 Olympic Games. The Relay Coach(es) will also take into consideration an athlete's ability to:
+ pass and receive the baton with either hand
+ run the turn and/or straight leg
+ any other event(s) in which an athlete(s) may be scheduled to participate.
In the event that the Head Coach and the Relay Coach(es) disagree with the relay team recommendation, the appropriate sport chair (Men or Women's Track & Field Committee) will be brought in to cast the deciding vote. If the appropriate sport chair (Men or Women's Track & Field Committee) is unavailable or unreachable, the decision of the Head Coach will be upheld.
No way that Felix can run a sub-50 400m right now.

She ran a 50.2 leg three months ago and she's running much faster at 200m now than she was then.
Wrongo.
Might also be a tough call to put Marion on the team because if she tests positive for something the team might lose any medal it wins. Wonder if it goes through the minds of the coaches whether the athletes are on something?
Having said that, I don't think Marion is *currently* likely to test positive for anything.
Marion f***ed up the pass...
