Just wanted to know the latest Letsrun consensus concerning GFern. Have we written him off yet, or is he still on the comeback trail? Any recent results? Would hate to see an 8:34 2-miler with an indoor 3:55 mile record fizz out so soon...

There is no 'we'.
Seems like the poor man's Webb. Great early promise, then injuries. : (
Why doesn't he take up racewalking? Maybe he would have fewer injuries.

Yep, a lot of similarities to Webb. Probably one of the best talents we have, showing flashes of brilliance followed by years of injury/sub par performances.
I think his freshman year of 3:55.02 alone, wire-to-wire 3:39.00 with a kick for 1st in NCAA Outdoor Championships, and 13:25 while still 18 compares well to Webb's 3:53.
Fernandez was a year ahead in school.
Looks like you gave up on him before he ran 3:34 which is his best mark.
He may show up with a 3:32 next year. That 3:34 came at the end of the summer in Europe after a mostly lousy spring campaign that ended on an upswing. It doesn't take him a lot of health to produce.

He wasn't in highschool. Doesn't compare at all.

Oh yeah, how could anyone forget that there were some folks stupid enough to think that he faked it? Thanks for the reminder that there is no limit to human stupidity!

Doesn't matter. The point here is that it is a shame that GF could never stay healthy long enough to really make a go of it.
Nike ought to organize a media outlet for Schumacher's group. It's like they go in hiding for years until a good race comes out.

Because they're ashamed of themselves.

So, a 19 year-old HS senior is okay to go? And, even a 20 year-old HS senior can set a record the LRC purists would acknowledge?
No.
I am hoping that they can get him healthy like they got Jäger healthy.
I hope he can get a base in for a 5000 next year. I always thought he would be a 10000 runner and not a miler.
Smith killed his motivation, and Shoemaker isn't any better.
Some poor posting on this thread has confused the issue around Fernandez's age, he wasn't a year ahead, he was young for his grade and set the HS record while 17 and set the college indoor mile record when just 18.
He is still only 22 years-old.
Motivation is not the issue. He just needs to find a way to stay injury free.
