Edward Cheserek beat him by 46 seconds. This is just ugly. It sounds like he was running it as a workout, but this is just not good in any sense.

Already explained and discussed in two other threads.
no other explanation except him getting of PEDs that he was on when he set his records.
How is that not good in any sense? That's a perfectly fine off season workout for a 13:30 or faster runner.
Exactly, he ran 4:59 pace, pretty obvious he was putting down a tempo-type workout in the offseason. Quit hating.
Look at the results, that was Webb Alan. Not Alan Webb.
WEBB IS...
Webb was pacing the PSU guys through 3 miles then ran a hard 2 definitely a controlled effort

Can anyone verify how relaxed he looked in the last two miles?
How is Elkaim 40th and UO's #7? For a sub 4 or equiv multiple times and 13:30's 5K PR, his XC is pretty erratic.
because not every kid reaches their potential, and not every kid has linear improvement at every distance, and not every kid races flawlessly at all times.
What a crock. So if I ran it and my average pace was a nice round number I could deem it a workout if I got my a*s kicked? Why would he run to be a lousy 10 seconds per mile off the winning pace? Being that close he should have been easily able to step it up those 10 seconds and win. 10 seconds per mile isn't much for an athlete of that caliber. Next, what 'elite' athlete in their right mind would want to take a chance at twisting an ankle or otherwise getting injured at a race they are 'training through.' Nobody trains through a race. They suck and end up needing an excuse. About the only explanation I can possibly buy is that he was pacing one or more guys. Although unlikely in an XC meet, it is possible. Bottom line for Webb? His best days were in HS.
Thank you for that reasoned analysis.
Elkaim has always been that way, he's not an xc guy. Even in high school, his track times were always far superior to his track times. Some guys are just that way.

Track times superior to track times? What sorcery is this?
A kid from the high school 1 mile from my house beat him by 1 second.
Not bad it seems to me
